Starting off with texturing

Hi guys, I've been modeling for a while now, used Maya for about 3 years and want to hone my Texturing skills. I'm pretty much a complete beginner, I don't know Photoshop that well but I can get around the program without any huge problems. I wanted to start off with a standard crate, just a box with a crate texture that I can create in photoshop. I was hoping to create something along the lines of this texture:-

Does anyone know of any tutorials to get started on texturing, even the basics like texturing a crate? Would really appreciate some info, thanks in advance!

I would say learn photoshop first before you get into game art texturing tutorials

Learn the basics and brushes and workflow, layers, filters etc and then apply that to game art. If you learn purely from texturing tutorials then you'll have a very narrow knowledge of the program.

Photoshop has plenty of tutorials in it and there are hundreds of video tutorials online

After you know the principles of Photoshop I would HIGHLY! recommend these video tutorials, I got them for Christmas and was in a very similar situation to yourself myself. I now have the confidence to go out and texture anything, sort of...

:: Eat 3D :: Next-Gen Texturing

Another resources I would highly recommend is the articles on this website, they are infinitely rewarding and just a few hours of reading could teach you the theory and principles behind next generation texturing.

Go for the next gen texturing video first if its texturing you are after. I got it last night and started to watch it today and I have learnt sooo much all ready. There is a sale on until the end of the month too.

I would sign up at 3dbuzz if you haven't already and check the video tutorials on Photoshop.
