Basic Crate

This is my first post on Game Artist, go easy.

I'm in animation, i don't have to worry about all that stuff like poly count or tris, but even so, this is just a simple cube in max.

I'm a student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. This was my first basic in-class-assignment. I hope to learn a lot in the next few months, and I hope to post more of projects on here.

The texture I applied was just a basic bitmap that I created in photoshop with several photographs of wood, fungusy looking stuff, and dirt.

Hope you like it._______________________________________________ __

First off that thing is in some serious need of a normal/bump map! If you created the texture it's not bad, if not it's def just a cube, haha. A bump map would really bring out the shape though.

I'm afraid you do, the higher the polycount the longer your animations will take to render. Even the animation industry uses polycount limits. They are much higher but they just don't throw billions of polygons on just for good measure they are all thought out and placed intentionally. You'll learn this in you animation studies hopefully and polycount and how you place your edge loops and your mesh flow is VERY important in animation. Not so much for just a 'still' image but for moving objects it's very important.

And since you are a new student let me let you know that unfortunately a degree won't land you that job. Your portfolio is king. If you do a search here or on any of the 3d boards like polycount, cg society you'll find tons of posts on only a few select schools that are good for 3d but by and large you'll need to spend LOTS of time learning the 'industry standard' stuff on your own via boards like these.

So keep it up, set some goals and try to do new stuff every week and the degree will pair up with your portfolio but it will not get you a job without a decent portfolio. Good luck!
