I understand next-gen cars have insane amounts of polycount, but why dont they ever use normal maps instead?

I would guess that since everything is going by so fast except the cars, the amount of detail needed in the environment requires very few polys. A normal map is sometimes a poor substitute for polygons, and if you have them so spare, why not use them.

3rdman: its good idea to use normal maps on small details, which if they will be model will take many tris.
guys, you can expect an updated with finished exterior modelling in next few days, stay tuned

I think it's a matter of enthusiasm for the vehicles - they want to show respect for the vehicles so the vechicles take center stage (if you are talking about Gran Turismo)

GT is by car nuts for car nuts - they are the car nut video game standard bearer, so if there is ever going to be a fully accurate 3d model of a car nut's fav car they can drive around in a race, it might as well be them

hey there, thanks for your replies
here is my progress on the Lancer, finally exterior mesh is done with optimizing
tris count is now 23358
on the next week i will move to interior
