Colt 1911a1 Progression
OK, first of all, I will just explain that these images are of the colt model I am making that ARE NOT DONE, hence why it's in the work in progress section
![]() I understand what bits I need to add, I understand that some bits will need tweaking and polishing up later on, but because I have said that I will post a picture of my colt here, I will, and this will be my progression report kindof thing in this thread. When I finally get the gun done and textured, looking all pretty and stuff, I'll also do a firing animation. First things first. My OLD model. The pictures here are of the very first attempt at making a gun for a mod i'm doing. At the time I was rather happy and impressed at my work...until I felt like an absolute dumbo for not making the slide seperate from the main base of the gun...therefore not allowing me to do any animation. Here they are: ![]() and ![]() Now...since then, I couldnt be stuffed starting that over again, and I just couldnt for some reason figure out why I thought that creating the slide seperate would be so hard, but hey, I came to these forums, and I guess even though I asked for help and got some answers, I really already had the idea on how to make the slide...I just didn't think I was right. So anyway, I use my old model and deleted the whole slide part, all those faces went bye bye, and so I began creation of the slide from a simple few blocks, to getting more detailed with curves, etc. No, I don't have every image under the sun, mainly because right now I'm really incredibly tired, as most of my day has been spent studying how the weapon fires, studying the inside of the gun, studying what bits are what, etc etc, and finally, the actual building part of the slide which probably has taken me too long as I was quite tired, BUT, here is the gun with the seperate slide...it's not very noticable, but the slide is seperate from the main base part of the gun, and it does slide back and forward. I would have taken more screenshots except Maya just wants to run slow and take half a minute to respond after I click on the model I have there just so I can move it or something,... Also, because I only have been working on half of the gun, I had to mirror the geometry, connect the middle vertices up the center line, change the normals of faces so that I didn't have wierd looking bits, and blocky looking bits, I had to append some bits in the trigger guard area and then smooth them out, then I had to extrude the faces on the inside to create a make shift trigger, and there is no way in hell that I was going to add every other little detail...you may also notice that the gun sight isn't there compared to the original model... The gun sight is one of the smaller pieces that I do as I near completion of the model, it's just like doing the safety catch, and all the rest. Oh and uh, yeah, I understand that the hand grip bit shouldn't look like that, but that's also one of the final touches I will be doing, I know what the grip looks like now, as when I did that grip I only had a side reference picture, not a 3d one. Anyhow (i'm having difficulties uploading this picture!)....... ..... .... .. . oh yay, the picture finally uploaded without a 404 error...so here is my current model. ![]() You can pick it apart if you want, but it's only very early in progress, the rest has to be done, and optimization and tweaks to the model would have to be done at final. Then I need to learn how to take better quality renders, because the maya renderer gives me dodgy blurry fuzzy looking pictures >( Anyway...that's progression report number 1....tomorrow I'll either have the model finished, textured if lucky, and I'll end it with progression report 2 :P However, I don't think I'll get it textured....we'll see...I'm a man of miricles, who can't spell miracles right the first time around because he's so damn tired... On that note...end of my report, I want sleep! |

nice report, and almost a flawless model as far as I can tell by looking at the renders you posted.
Only one thing though, the barrel shouldnt stick out as much (at the front)as it does now, and the small plate holding the barrel and the guiding rod (the massive cylinder under te barrel), needs to be slimmer. Not that much, but it was actually the very first thing I noticed right away when viewing the last render you showed. ![]() parts but when you make an almost flawless model at second try, I have the right to be picky at this small thing ![]() and really, its just a tad slimmer, just enough to make a difference. (if you dont see, render the colt again without shadows) offcourse I know your going to add and change stuff, so im anctious to see your progress. Last edited by Schuey; 09-25-2006 at 11:33 AM. |

hehe, out of all the things, that would probably be the only part I'd pick on so far aswell
![]() The barrel...well, I basically just shoved it in there for the render...it is just a cylinder with a little hollow bit on the end (the player won't see the whole barrell, so it'll just be a texture...I'll take a no shadow picture and show you what I mean...I think maybe I should save the spotlight renders for when it's finished. I also know what you mean about the plug (little round bit under the barrel and it's bushing, I couldnt actually find any GOOD reference pictures on the model I'm using. The reference picture I am using is this one: ![]() It's not of very high quality, there is another one that I just found that was higher quality, which kinda annoys the hell ouf of me, but...yeah, that front bit was hard to do without many references. So it was basically another rushed job at this stage, I'm sure you'll probably notice plenty more mistakes and stuff in the pictures below, I've got a little while before I have to head off to martial arts training and then do work for a few hours, so I'll get this done beforehand, so you guys can comment. Here are some pics: (NOTE: I changed the shader for you to all see...oh and uh...because maya was playing up with the shaders, and turning half my model into a wireframe only leaving the slide a different shader to what it originally was.) This is a bigger picture because I hoped that maybe the quality of the image would be better...I was wrong. ![]() This here is the front of the gun where the barrell is and the plug. Just so the rest of you can see what schuey was talking about. ![]() Here is a side view of that part aswell, I would have done them in different colours so you can see what is what, but I've gotta head off soon. ![]() This next one is a side view of the whole pistol...the quality still isn't great, so if anybody has any suggestions as to how to get a better quality picture in maya, I'm open to suggestions. ![]() So that's it for this morning... I'll work on the rest of the gun today, and hopefully have it done |

yeah, well at the time, I was basically tryin to just grab an image and stick it in...that didn't work too well, lol...but then again, I did pretty good considering.
I didn't JUST use that reference image, but that was the side view reference that I used as a template behind my model. (Image plane or whatever you call it) I also used exploded views and stuff, but I couldnt find any front on images that were for this specific model of the gun that I modelled from. I know the later models don't have as many serrations on the slide, and they have different hammers and stuff. I'll get working on the gun shortly...I just got back home, after looking for some new sunnies, as my old sun glasses broke on the arm....and well....I couldnt find any sunnies! they were all either super huge, super small, too wide, they fit perfect but I looked like a fly..etc etc...and yeah...i'm hungry now...it's 4pm, it's overcast miserable weather, I'm tired....so I need to eat, rest, get active (music) and get modelling. |

okay, turning the shadows off revealed something
![]() the whole gun is too slim I'm afraid :P and yeah, use the refs Afterburner supplied, those are supurb, and have everty detail that you need! well, unless your starting to add stuff, I dont have anything to say anymore :P edit: I had a strange feeling about the ref you were using (toyish), and it seems this is a 9mm verscion, the original is chambered in .45 Although it has colt engravings, I dont believe this is a real colt 1911, or atleast its not an original one. toyish?
My model is toyish or the actual weapon reference? I already have a bunch of really good references, I've got 2 seperate folders (one folder which I downloaded just 2 days ago)...so I have plenty...and I didn't really like the ones recommended...I didn't have a thorough look, but basically, I've already got most of them, and the other ones I didn't really need, but thanks for showing me the references anyway ![]() I don't know if I can get some screenshots done tonight or not, but yeah, I havent worked on the model very long and I guess I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I tend to find something that I don't like and I do everything possible to fix it or make it better. I ended up redoing the grip so it doesnt look so crap now, and I added some curvature to the back of the gun where the person holds the gun. I'm just wondering what else I have to do before mirroring the gun and editing the features on it. It's mainly the hammer area, which I'll take a picture of. OH! I know now....I have to add the poly killer. The serrations on the side of the slide ![]() Last time when I added the serations, the poly count when flying. |

It's most definately not fully a real .45 1911. On the real deal the mag extends asfar back as the grippanels and the reference used here it only extends about halfway. With that in mind it's unlike to be a 9mm variant.
Here's what I suspect it might be, a 1911 with a .22 conversion unit installed. |
