Rotund, Moustachioed Cosmonaut

For which Engine - None in particular
Current Polycount - 3,358
Max Polycount - ~4000
Texture Size - 1024x512 diffuse + specular, haven't started yet
Description of background information on piece - Fat Cosmonaut in fictional spacesuit
Where are you looking to receive criticism - Topology, features

Early concept, playing around with colors:

Meet Sergei, fattest Cosmonaut in Soviet Union! The suit is very loosely based on real Soviet spacesuits, but doesn't match any particular one very closely. I'm happy with the general form, now intend to model his backpack and polish the model a bit before moving on to texturing.

If I find time I'd like to rig and animate him, too. And after that, maybe make a chimpanzee companion

This is my first project on GA and my first real "current-gen" character model. I suppose now would be a good time to consider critiques, so by all means tear it apart.

He's looking great, dude, loads of character and his default pose is already looking sweet. I don't have anything major to comment on...

You might want to splash out on a few more polys at the finger joints so that they don't loose too much volume when animated.

It's also a little hard to tell from that shot, but it seems that his back sticks out a fair way past his shoulders, the place where the arm joins should be further towards the rear, making the back/shoulder/arm join fairly flush across his back (but still fairly defined across the front).

Maybe a little more asymmetryin some of the major shapes that make up his suit? The gauge and pockets are a nice touch, but something more around the torso could be nice (some sort of toolbelt, maybe? a filter fitted into the cabling? not too sure).

This has incredibly potential. Love the shapes you've got down already - Bags of character and bags of style, just from a flatshaded model.

Can't wait to see more, mate!

OK GO!

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I shifted his arms a bit Talon, you were right about them not lining up well with the shoulder region. Also modelled his backpack, sectioned the tubes, did some minor tweaks and cleaned up the triangulation here and there for better smoothing. He's currently at 3,896 tris, helmet included.

I also gave the fingers a little more geometry as Talon suggested. I'm not sure if this is the optimal way to do finger joints?

I think I'm done with the model, unless anyone has more suggestions? After this, unwrapping and texturing.

he looks great! i'm curious though, is his helmet going to be open like that or does he have a visor to slide open and shut?

Thanks. He's got a visor, which you can see in the first wire shot.

Dusted this guy off and started work on the texture, laying down the major areas.
