The outline is a cheap-o push and flip effort, yeh :P
The rest of it's a toon-shader style deal that lerps between 3 textures (light/shadow/highlight) based on a few combined inputs. You can see the full shader if you click on the thumbnail-y thing at the bottom of the post. |

That space werewolf is fantastic, I'm especially loving the shader. Glad I happened to stop by!
Would be interesting to see how it looks when moving. Usually no matter how cartoony or handdrawn something looks in a screenshot the fluidity of movement makes it look obviously CG again. Someday I'd like to try something to remedy that, maybe by influencing the shading based on the shading done on the previous frame. Only a vague idea at the moment.

I find it best to do one thing at a time, especially when they are so different, because ideas from one can often lead onto another and i don't think you want your humorous whodunit to have traces of you dark psychological story. It is kind of like reading more than one book at once. you should really finish one before you start the other.
