Tire and Rim

You may have seen this tread in the 'what you're working on' thread. I did somemore work on this over lunch, decided it'd be fun to post pics and help motivate me to finish. The tread is a normal map, and that low poly mesh is temp. The rim is very WIP high poly mesh that'll be used to generate the normal. I haven't decided on a total polygon budget, but will use a 512 for the texture.

Eventually, this'll lead to a full vehicle if I get the time. The final plan for this tire is to be as realistic as possible under the limitations. I'll post the ref once I'm closer to those goals.

Update to the high detail rim mesh. The tread mesh is temp to look nice with the normal side-by-side with the high poly. Next step is side detail on the tire itself, and possibly redoing the tread normal. Then overall low poly mesh, etc.

ah tires, so boring.

Making good progress, what vehicle would the wheel be connected to if you were to do it?

MONSTER TRUCK!

Not exactly sure. I want to do something sporty and flashy, yet not out of the range of the average consumer. My roommate suggests a Mazda RX8.

i completely agree with your roomate! he sounds like a smart cookie.. i myself happen to own a rx-8,, and ironicly i also happen to be your roomate! plus if you did the x8 it would be easy to walk down stairs and get good ref shots!

been slow going with all my work stuff, but here's a quick test of the full normal map. It's not really optimized or anything, really just a test, but it's a 512, on 448 triangles.

Did some more testing this morning, baked an Ambient Occlusion, and added a Specular. Again, still testing with some sloppy materials now, I'll clean these up, redo the tire section and it'll be done.

I'm really happy just how much adding Ambient Occlusion added to the Diffuse, as compared to the previous post.

indeed, ambient occlusion rocks.

Though I dont like how the heads of the screws in the middle of the rim are disorted.
