I agree, they look kinda random. Dont just try to copy something 1 on 1. You will copy the mistakes they made as well.

Finally found some spare time to get this back up and running - had another crack at the pants (excuse the pun ) and going to retopo the arms as the original wouldn't allow for good deformation.

So I'm thinking I should called it a day on this guy, there's probably tons more refinement I could do.... however other work is waiting to be done and need to pick up some speed

Hey Ronin, cheers - the hair itself was just created as part of the mesh but raised/lowered to match the high poly. Shot from Maya:
