Project Champion (REBOOT)

Good morning from Boston... been a while since I've posted on this forum, but I had something to share with you. Back in 2008, I started a personal fan service art work for a wonderful (but forgotten) 2D fighter called Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side. The purpose of this project is to familiarize myself with designing digital human characters that can move around fluidly within a fighting game environment, learn how to design levels and optimize for performance (using Unity3d), and utilise creation tools to create believable characters (with multiple costumes).

For my first model in this project, I started to create the character Trident, who is a gladiator from Atlantis, who was killed when his opponent cheated in a duel, causing his people to become forced to live underwater. So far, i have been working on it in Zbrush trying to get the proper anatomy until he is intimidating enough. The challenge will be getting the idea that he only has one hand and having to fit it into the gameplay. For graphics, I plan on using Diffuse, Spec, Normal, and cubemapping for metal parts.

Each image is a progress...nothing is complete. I was going to go with a very fish like face but decided to go for a human feel... still not happy with the body since i am going for a very olympian feel to him. Once the body is done, and retopologised, the right hand will be replaced with a long trident (no idea how this will work in a 3d fighter)

WARNING: MANY IMAGES! (in Order of Progress)

I am still working on the hands and tweaking the body shape until it feels natural. For the face, i am going for basically a "Don't fuck with me, or you will die a slow painful death" look. Still working on the first costume and proportions... C&C welcome.

The legs are unproportionate to the rest of the body, I think they should be slimmed down quite a bit. If the guy is aquatic he shouldn't be very bulky anyways, swimmer bodies are very lean. But really good work so far.

Hey Lifeburn, had no idea someone responded to my thread... I def agree about the legs on this guy...trying to slim him down quite a bit since he can fight on land and sea...i am also kinda not feeling some parts of the anatomy that i want to fix. I will also shrink in the torso just a bit to make him nice and lean. More to come

What's up, everybody? Just posting a few updates that I started work on yesterday...I ended up completely reworking the back muscles and quads to get them as close as I could to proper anatomy...still need to smooth the muscles down so he isn't too chiselled looking. I also raised his traps so it adds some more menace

I feel things are still off, but i want to work on them before retopology... feel free to comment

Hi there. I think the legs are quite good now but there's something wrong with his forearms. His forearm muscles are a bit too big and his wrists seem non-existent. From what i understand, you will still use his left hand as it is so you should probably work a little more on the wrists. Good luck with your character, looking forward to see it completed.

Hey man...thanks a bunch on your feedback...the wrists were kind of bothering me for a while but I will address that. As for the forearm length, they DO look a tad too long...i will fix this although the arms will be covered up by the gauntlets and other details... stay tuned

Hey everyone, what's up? Just passing thru with a new update on this model...I think I am near the home stretch before I do some remeshing and refining the details that make up this model... I am trying to put his weapon that will replace his right hand, but need to make something that will look fierce and add a sense of power and intimidation...

On his right arm, over his bicep, i decided to add a greek pauldron as a trophy for the gladiator... kinda figured he would keep a piece of his opponent after he killed them...

Here are some Zbrush captures... i would love your thoughts before i do anything more...

This is the sort of final look i am going for him:

The weapon will add to the length of the right hand... just need a good, scary trident to add to the model... C&C welcome

This might seem really silly and pedantic, but that weapon doesn't look like it'd be good for swimming!

LOL, true... but i am creating this model from an older game that came out back in the day ...and he (unfortunately) had that trident to fight with... after losing his hand
