the texture work is superb! i'm still tryna figure out how you textured the edges/corners of each piece--from the scope--even though their uvs are separate from each other (not connected/merged). waiting to see whats next...

well i'm using the 3d feature of photoshop for that .. that way i can paint directly on the model instead of guessing .... damn that sounded very cliche

Seriously? Never tried the Photoshop 3d feature before but that sounds interesting. Can you also use that to paint, for example, textures to use in a game?

of course .... i do that all the time .. here is an example AlexScorpions Tactical AK 103 at Fallout New Vegas Nexus - New Vegas mods and community

and here is an article abou it or a tutorial Photoshop CS4 3d Tutorial

basically you can always "export" what you have drawn on a surface to a 2d texture .. oh and btw .. recently i've discovered a progr called 3d coat .. which is much better for painting in 3d than photoshop .. try it you'll get 30 days trial 3D-Coat - Voxel sculpting, Retopology, UV-mapping, Texture painting

great idea! i always forget about that photoshop feature...3d coat i've heard but never used it before, i might check out the trial...
