I've come to the realization that I'm not active enough in the 3d community as I'd like or need to be
So, taking steps to remedy that.Jallsop, my first impressions were similar to others here. I believe your scene has a very credible atmosphere going on, but as all works, there is room for improvement. (I'm taking into account that the scene is a wip as you mentioned) I'm partially biased on the account that I'm a huge fan of your environment's theme. Largely due to Nuclear-Dawn, as well as a flash movie called Fallen Angel that really sold the post apocalyptic urban warzone well. Overall, good presentation. The scene clearly depicts the war torn battlefield theme and draws you into the little world you've created. Again, it seems to be in the middle of a pre visualization stage and gearing up for something more; perhaps full on level design production. Hopefully, that made some sort of sense. Despite all that, the scale of certain objects to one another seems off. The most striking is -and I know this has already been mentioned- the soldier clutching the humongous warhammer40k gun. It also hit me that the kind of skyscrapers that you seem to be after (just my assumption based on large urban environments in game and real life) is begging for larger, taller buildings. Perhaps something like this? ![]() The sense of scale is also brought into question regarding the soldiers to the surrounding buildings and the question as to whether or not they could move around in or stand up correctly in at all. I'm taking into account that they are in a crouched position and that this is all somewhat moot if the characters are placeholders to sell the scene and thus, I've put way too much thought into this ![]() I'd really like to see this fleshed out and turned into a full blown level, as it's been something I've entertained doing myself for some time now. Oh yeah, congrats and best of luck with your new job ![]() |

Im greatfull for the comments back guys. Some real good help coming out from you.
As you can see its a big WIP. Alot to get arround i know i originaly put this model down as a concept for a better remodeled version of the whole map. Most of this is being remodeled and normal mapped applied. This like i said was just a practice, more of a brush back up on my max skills before my industry job. I've modeled many of models within fantasy and even racing but never realy looked at urban environments. Yeah of course had the few adds with Battlefield engine and others but nothing like Gears of War post Apoco style. I needed something to put my mind at a challange and well this would be it ![]() Spear its nice to meet others who have a passion for this sort of environment work its great to meet you. I love this sort of environment type as you can be very expressive and create some sort of background asking questions as "Why is the city like this", "Whats the atmoshphere like? gas masks? did some chemical polute the air?. I can go on and on :P I'll keep you guys informed with screens and scrollings of the level also get this onto the 360 soon so i'll get some shots out on "Grey Level Format". Thank you again for your comments. Everyone. Also like to add, characters are a bit out range as im no good with animation & riggin. So hope you guys can understand. Something that I noticed immediatly was the floors of the buildings. Assuming that the buildings were constructed of steel reinforced concrete, if they were to take massive damage, the material itself would crumble and fall away. The way you have it, looks like the floors are made of homogeous metal and the damage done to them was from the side, making them buckle like that. Realistically, the floor should either be level and intact, or crumbling away. Perhaps in a pile below, or chunks hanging from the steel "re-bar".
There are circumstances where the floor will remain, for the most part, in tact but not level. And that is if the floors supporting structure were to give way, a couple walls for example. (Although, thats why they typically have pillars throughout the floors.) Also, most long rifles are designed to fit into the shoulder pocket of whoever fires them. This serves several purposes, the greatest of which being 1. Sighting the weapon, and 2. stabilizing the weapon for fire. The huge boxy weapons given to the soldiers would probably weight a lot (an M-16/M-4 variant weighs about 8 pounds not including extra attachments). Think about what the weapon does. What size projectile it fires. If you ever get the chance to pick up a war-fighting weapon such as an M-4, you'll be suprised at how small they actually are. Otherwise, nice work! I can definatly see this in my mind as the scene of an intense fire-fight! Keep at it, you'll do well! |

If you look at the building on a birds eyes view you will see theres huge holes within the floors, most the floors on levels are desimated. As the backstory was a metor shower upon the planet.
Heres a shot fo one fetured in the scene. You may even notice the metorite dug deep into the building it will be shown as still smoldering.![]() |
