Researching Next-Gen Special FX?
Hello everybody!
Besides creating art, I also love to deep into the technical part of game-graphics. I'm currently looking for articles/papers on visual effects in modern games. (i.e. Unreal 3 Cod 4, Crysis etc.) It's easy to find mediocre tutorials for something that looks a bit like fire, rain, steam, dust etc. but I want the real stuff. Many modern games use powerful particle-systems combined with high-class hand-drawn particles. I want to know the details behind this stuff. Sometimes big game-studios release detailed papers after the games are released. Does anybody have any idea where to look for such stuff. Maybe someone even has some articles. Thanks in advance! ![]() |

you used to be able to get all the presentations from siggraph on a dvd, with the slides included. I got one from a couple of years back
other than that I would get a database password from your college and access white paper databases like Athens (there was one that dealt specifically with multimedia papers but I cant remember the name) where you'll find research papers published from major universities. Also most libraries should be able to get their hands on technology journals for you where the latest stuff is published I think your more likely to find in depth stuff that way rather than hunting down info from large studios. Its not very likely they are going to want to share the meaty stuff

The other place to look is GDC, most big companies will release powerpoint of the presentations they give.
Here's a few links, some of this might be useful, but I'm not sure... Bungie: Halo3 stuff mostly Lots of interesting stuff here, not just programming stuff. Bungie.net : Inside Bungie : Publications Naughty Dog: Various examples of work created for Uncharted. Naughty Dog, Inc. :: Purveyors of Fine Video Entertainment There are lots more, if I can remember where they are I'll update this post. Let me know if they are any use. Cheers Chris |

Those look promissing! I'm currently downloading them.
Thanks! ^^ Keep them comming. The GDC really seems to be the best source for this stuff. I'm listening to the recordings from time to time, but it's not always easy to find the papers on the net. I'll try to be there myself next years. |
