Autodesk Maya Or Luxology Modo for your modelling and Adobe Photoshop for your paint package I think would be a more than competent setup .

Edit: Free/open source.. not sure, maybe GIMP for a paint package but don't quote me on that. And for modelling, I believe Blender supports OSX which is open source software.

And i'm downloading Blender now... Thx again

Ow yeah and your quite right about Gimp, but i've had some trouble with it in the past, though its not bad for free .

It's pretty good imo, but if you have Photoshop and are skilled with it, then no need to change, Photoshop is industry standard and the best, bar none. Blender's a little odd for my tastes but it's probably the most popular of the free/open source packages, so you won't have any trouble finding tutorials and support for it.

Lightwave also supports OS X, although if you were to dig deep and buy one of these modelling packages, I'd have to recommend Modo or Maya.
Modo because does everything Lightwave can but better, and seamless integration with Lightwave for if you're working on Lightwave based projects, and is generally a great app.
And Maya because it's also an industry standard app, along with 3DS Max. So if you're serious about it game art, best off going with that.

I've been playing around with Blender, i'm definitely going to spend some time with before I go out and buy one. It didn't take me long to get to grips with Photoshop, but i'll admit this looks like its gunna be hard. Time to look up about a million tutorials... thx again

I use cinema 4d on my mac here. But if you're looking for a low cost but high quality 3d app. I'd check out Cheetah 3D. I've only ever played with the demo but for the cost it's very powerful.

No, 3DS isn't OSX compatible.

You should be able to run Max on a Mac with one of the virtualPC apps, or even a secondary boot install of Vista / XP, right?
