What version of max are you using? I just saw this on Eat 3D yesterday..

If you're using Max9 then what you need to do is add an edit poly modifier in the stack under the cage modifier on the low poly mesh. Enter edit poly face mode, select all faces then click the hide button. Max 9 has a glitch where it won't let the light pass through the low poly mesh for AO bakes with MR. Hope this helps ya.

3d max used to work fine for me but, i installed a crysis plugin to allow me to work with models for the sandbox engine.

Then my computer was not working i did a system restore and i lost max, when i re installed 3d max the crytool were still there but did not work properly now i always get script errors when i open up render to texture.

I just need to know if there are other ways i can do ao bakes with out using 3d max

there are probably some hidden script files left... You'll have to turn on the hidden folders, but there's a big chance that you'll find some "left-overs" at the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\9 - 32bit\enu\scripts

It's a long shot, but I don't think max cleans this data by default. It also contains all your gui settings...

Cheers but no luck i looked here before and got rid of some files, i cant find any file that look like the crysis plugin.

I just need to know if there are other programs i can AO bake with, not maya or blender tho!

xNormal will do baking.

you can also forgo using Mental Ray and drop a skylight in and use the scanline tracer.

i have problems with baking ao also. the best way to do it is set you object to pure white then use a skylight/lightracer and render out a lighting map.
