MAYA question

Hello folks,

I'm a 3D modeler and I want to go and find a job in the Game industry. In our company we use Lightwave. But I started to learn Maya for the UV's and because I bought some gnomon DVD to see how to get the job done.

My problem!

I'm uving the upperbody, in the DVD they extract the arm from the torso. Uv it seperately and combine it together later. Wauw nice magic, so when I'm triing it it goes like this: I select the upperbody, extract, and do just the same like the guy from the DVD did. RESULT: my arm has a uv( cilindrical uv), but you cant see bv. no checker? Still, the materials have the same.

So I do a other test, because I cant stand when it's not working!
- extract arm__ uv automatic the upperbody and arm___ result: it works!
But it's not the same offcourse. I want to know why it doesnt work with the cilindrical uving. i asked a Maya user allready, but he's an animator and his uv skill are the same as me...
