Inserting hole into mesh for SubD

There was a video tutorial last year that explained a couple different ways of inserting a hole into a mesh without booleans. For the life of me, I cannot find it and was wondering if anyone has a link to it?

I think I know the video you're talking about, but I really can't find it myself :P. I do know the procedure off by heart though, so I'll try and put something together later.

Isn't that like you chamfer a vertex, and then put a cut each from all it's 4 edges to the respective outward vertices??

reverse this dude's peg and you have a circular hole:

Grant Warwick/Sathe had some videos but I'm not sure where to find them. They were on CGChain but they got yanked, he was going to stick them up on the Area but I don't know if they're there yet.

i often just cut the hole in by hand, then select the edge ring and click that circle thing in polyboost to make it round :P
always depends on where in the mesh to hole goes tho.

I made a quick tut on how I learned to do it. Pretty easy and very helpful. Enjoy =)

Nicely done Autocon, my way's a little different, but pretty much achieves the same result (made this before I saw your post :P).

I remember learning this method from a video ages back that I mentioned earlier, so I pretty much follow the same procedure from memory, anyhow, here's the vid:

Hole punching into an awkward surface - subD

I am also demonstrating some Modo tools here that make doing tasks like this easier . However, if you're a somewhat experienced modeller, you will be able to understand what's going on regardless of the application used .

This is precisely what I do:

Edit: It seems one of those corner vertices didn't get weld properly. But anyways, that's not what we're talking about.

Solid stuff here people! Thanks for sharing. I'll add this thread to the tutorial thread, so if anybody has other techniques or good tutorials regarding this, please do post them.

another good technique is to create a spline circle with subdiv'/interpolation of 1 (eight sides is considered the lowest you want to aim for for a perfect circle. and then go into front/side top viewport and then using the cut tool with vertex snap on, you can cut a perfect circle!
