Thanks for the good feedback guys!
Just updated to v1.0, with shadows, fixed specular (thanks to rob at tech-artists.org) and linear correct settings. There's a version without shadows for people with Max 9 or lower. Talon: as cool as SSS might be, I think it's beyond the scope of this thing. It would require so much more code and generally just do away with my idea of making this clean & streamlined. The character I shaded with the shader looks pretty good without SSS anyway. But maybe if people really want that, I could go and try to fix JI style's SSS skinshader to work with Max again, since that one has errors now. Thanez: that looks awesome, keep posting stuff like this! Btw you're using a bloom post shader ? Sover: rimlight, sure, but bloom can't be done in a material like this, you have to use the Max Scene Effect Loader for that.

Something like that
![]() Is it me or is it updating the maps quicker than usual? I load the psd straight into there, and usually i get a second or two of 'lag' before it updates, but im not getting that with this ![]() A quick usp magazine: ![]() p.s. I was wondering if youre taking input/ideas? I was thinking a mipmap/AA/AF setting would be pretty awesome. For the time being, i have to turn them on in ATI CCC, which is being a bore, as I have to remember to turn it off before gaming :P Last edited by thanez; 22-03-2009 at 04:05 PM. |

Hey man, that looks great again
Btw if you're doing your bloom realtime and not in Photoshop afterwards: do you use a custom post-shader for that instead of the one that came with Max ? If so, please do share it with me, I'd really like to get more into those things.about the speed: it's possible that this happens because of the way I've constructed my code. I use a lot more of a structured process in the pixelshader than Doylle does, and I've tried to keep performance in mind a bit. It would be really cool if that's actually the reason it runs faster for you, means I succeeded in my goal. And regarding input: I definitely do, but unfortunately the things you mention are outside of my control within Max. AA is an application setting that can only be enabled by the application itself (like in a game), or like in Max, by overriding global settings (Nvidia allows per-program settings). MipMap and filtering settings theoretically can be defined by the shader, but I think when trying to change them, Max seemed to always default to crappy linear filtering. I'll do some testing on that, but it's well possible Autodesk screwed us over by not allowing any of that. AA for example will not work at all in 2009, even when you override globally

Ah, I do them in photoshop. I was told once how to do it with the one that came with max, but I can do it better and faster in photoshop, so i stayed with that
![]() Its really too bad that I'll have to use ATI CCC and go back and forth. I wish they at least supplied per-program settings like nvidia ![]() |

When not use the "allow program to decide" options for AA/AF in Catalyst? From what I've noticed, it defaults to the highest settings in every application, then turns them down for games unless you can get ~32fps or greater with those settings(the maximum frame rate the human eye can detect).

"Allow program to decide" will allow Max to go for it's default no AA, no filtering settings. It's just Autodesk that thinks we don't need to have control ovr those settings at all. Maybe it will be better in Max 2010.

Oh, framerates in-game isn't a problem, I usually just play source and l4d with 16xAA, 16xAF and all the settings to max (HD4870x2) at 1680x1050 (monitor limitation) - if i have anything higher than 4xAF in max though, fps drops to 20-10 sometimes. tbh its not such a huge deal, its more of an annoyance. I didn't spend all this money on my rig to have poor performance
