Nice tutorial, a bit on the spongey side imo but nothing a contrast adjustment cant fix. I tend to prefer a flexible base that can have an attribute altered at a whim in order to change the "feel" of a texture.
I also agree with Woody's note on cylinders. If you think about it in a logical sense, the light at the bottom of a weapon or facing away from the light is going to receive less light, therefore it wont refract the light as much as the section in direct exposure to a light source. So it's good practice to do the strongest highlight and other highlights working around the cylinder that gradually fade in strength and brightness.
And just a tidbit of helpful info, give highlights a faint blue-ish tint and shadows a brown>red tint, just for effect
But anyway, I suck at texturing so take my advice with a pinch of salt xD
