Question Character Polygon Budget for Modern MMORPGs?

It is kinda hard to find some good information on this or at least I haven't found out where to look.
How many polygons is acceptable for a mmorpg game character in a Direct X 9 game engine?
I used the WoW model viewer the models there are around 1000 - 1500 tris. However, they tried to make a game that runs even on dishwashers.
Other game characters i see have 8000-10000 tris and that seems way to much for me. Whats your opinion?

The long/short answer that I know of is just " it depends".

Read this short article for an idea of what I mean: rsart - Rick Stirling, games artist » Blog Archive » How many polygons in a piece of string?

You can also read this one: rsart - Rick Stirling, games artist » Blog Archive » Yes, but how many polygons?

I am working of a fantasy MMO right now, and 1000-1500 is fairly standard (since you want to reach a wider target audience with lower system requirements). I would say that for a MMO with direct X 9, 8000-10000 is too much. Again it really depends on the style that you are going for.

Based on what little I know of what you are doing, i would go for around 1500-3000. Just my opinion though.

Good luck.

I'm working on a possibly SMORPG.. S being simple or small.. possibly, because I don't know if it will work..

But anyway, my characters are some 3000-5000 polygons.

I was actually wondering this also, I have been trying to get my portfolio ready for next summer. I am doing my internship at SOE in Seattle so I was wanting to know what I was actually getting myself into. Thanks for the replies, now I know a round figure that I need to be shooting for. Thanks.
