So, yeah, crazybump is good for normal maps (If you know how to use it, or it'll spell disaster) and bad for specular maps. (atleast in my opinion)
I haven't been using crazybump in quite a while myself though. I tend to model a highpoly for everything that would benefit from it, and if I now have the time and energy for it. Otherwise I usually just go with the nvidia filter.
