How Do You TERRAIN

How do I or we get the terrain to go into like layers of hill and water? Is there a link showing some pics on how to do this I saw 1 awhile back and I wish I would have saved it im new at this but a quick learner just need a few pointers gotten perrty good so far just need a lilttle help on like raiseing and lowering the terrain im working on

What engine are you working with? (if one at all), before we know that there's not much we can say realy...
