dx 9. And direct 3d. Ive tried both.
Other .fx's work.

I reinstalled and installed the hotfixes and xoliuls shader works, but tons of maxscript errors and all of the buttons are still blank white boxes..
I guess I can work with that.. I just havto open the help file to see where I drop my diffuse, normals and spec maps

You only have direct x 9? I have DirectX 11. Try upgrading that.

Hey swag, just a little update..I installed dx11 and Im still getting those weird white boxes but the shader does work if I click Standard>DirectX Shader> xoliul 2009.fx...its basically the same without the fancy GUI. In case anyone else has that problem THIS is how you solve it.
Thank you swag!

I think you need at least 3.0 (probably 4.0) for any real directx shaders
what do you mean by "real"?
I'm curious what exactly are the features that can't work without 3.0.
I'm stuck with an old PC and i could use anything that renders materials more accurately than default max shader, so that i don't have to use someone else's pc to even preview how my works look like.

Did autodesk ever release a shader that's less crappy than standardFX or update standardFX?
i think i checked the folder in max2010 and it was same stuff that older versions have.

What I mean by 'real' is a good shader. One that looks good.

Basically nothing in Xoliul's shader 2.0 will work without shader model 3.0 or greater.

Your best bet is to try to find an older version of Xoliul's shader or maybe Marmoset (my old computer could handle it).

Ok so over the weekend I started baking maps for my Mech model for a school project..
first of all the baking process took 3 hours 47 minutes which is unbelievable considering my PC rig.

Second, now that I have my maps created, whenever I go to apply them using xoliul's shader, max crashes. Literally everytime I try to add a diffuse or specular max crashes for no ****ing reason.

Any ideas??

My pc setup:
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.8 ghz
4 gb DDR2 Ram
Nvidia GT8800 512 mb
500 gb HDD
1 TB external HDD

My maps are 4096x4096, does that have something to do with these crashes?

Do you apply your psd/tif files or something smaller like png or tga? I'd never use formats with layers in it.
If your baking takes so long, your setting might not be the best one. You may post them here? I was working with nearly the same rig until march last year and it never takes so long, even on AO-maps.
