Sorry for such a vague answer, but I think the general response for someone starting out would be...
Practice makes perfect. Keep doing tuts till you can do them on your own. Find some of your favorite things in the world (real or fake) and make those with the skills you have learned. Then keep going. |

One tips I can give, as a guy learning myself:
Finish what you start. I find myself hopping on new project before the first one is done. That means in the end, you'll have tons of unfinished models around. Unfinished models is not a fast way to learn :P And as PermaGrin said, make stuff you like! I starded 3D because I wanted to mod a game. Hence I started with Swords, axes, shields, etc. Now I am done with that, and I am all into guns. It makes things easier! Cheers, Matth |

Yeah I have to agree that learning by doing is your next step. Now you need to tackle your own projects and learn how to apply what you've learned.
Start with low poly stuff, then work your way up to more and more detail. I'm just now learning high poly modeling coming from UT2004 background. I've read a lot of tutes and I I know HOW to model and am pretty fast and efficient at it, it's just the production workflow decision making that I need to understand better. Also a few more high poly secrets wouldn't hurt either. but that will come with time as I try new stuff I'll ask for help in forums. |
