Hmm I don't have much experience with ZBrush but a good way to make your own stencils is to draw out a series of vector shapes in Photoshop which are black and white (like a heightmap) then use those.

There are a lot of custom brush packs out there which are great for stencils such as ornate shapes and medieval patterns, but if you want to make some of your own try and trace over reference for the shape you want, or adjust levels and contrast in existing images to get a good base as a stencil then enhance and work on in ZBrush itself.

Hope this helps,

Elliott

Lately Ive been making alot of alpha brushes with photos for the skin details on stuff like hands, and the face.
The problem is, when you use something that has lighting, it doesnt convert well to actual displacement.
Ive been thinking of a way to do it where you layer an inverted version of the same image with an additive blend mode like darken, so that you get valleys that are take from both the shadows and the highlights on the surface.

Hasnt worked yet Ill let you know.
