should a tile always be square ?

Is it possible to use a non-uniform horizontally or vertical tile like 1024-512 inside of Unreal.
This might cause mip map problems right?

Hmm, I don't see how it'd cause issues with the mip-mapping really. As far as I know the mip-maps would retain the 2:1 scale, like: 1024x512 > 512x256 > 256x128.

And if you need to use it on meshes that have a normal 1:1 unwrap you could simply tile the texture twice on the height in the material editor or whatever you now want.
