[3ds max] how would you cut this ?

this is not the first time i run into this issue and i can't figure out the most efficient way to cut those edges. i was wondering if there's a less tedious task than manual cut faces tool to cut that face ?

thanks in advance for you time!

You could select the big poly ->inset (doesn't matter how much)->collapse.

I do these kinds of caps by:
  1. Delete the offending cap
  2. Select the open edge
  3. Shift + Scale drag to extrude the edges to a centre point
  4. Ctrl + select Vertex Edit Mode
  5. Weld Selected
Then, to add more edges to help with meshsmoothing I'd:
  1. Select the central vertex
  2. Ctrl + select Edge Mode
  3. Connect
Insetting the cap poly, like Matti said, is a similar way of doing it, but I like to have my edges converge on the centre, rather than having an Ngon

If you inset that big poly, keep it selected and then collapse, you get exactly the same result . No Ngon at all.

I've just learned something

I thought you were refering to the collapsing of the modifier stack. D'oh!

I didn't know about collapse either, thank-you.

ctrl-alt-C is the hotkey for collapse in editable poly

It's super-effective!
