[WIP] Newbie Piece - Steyr Aug

Hey folks,

I am finally starting another (my 2nd) own model project. I was gone for quite a while after creating the old cashbox . This time I want to further increase my modeling skill and take this as an exercise. Yes, it's a weapon and probably the 10000th Steyr Aug you have seen, but I would love to get some crits, tips whatsoever, go!

Current Progess:

Here is the inital blockout:

More to come!

A small update. I reworked my blockout and started high polying. I am not really satisfied, this piece is very smooth and wavy, maybe not the best piece for a newbie like me but I will do my very best

Crits or Hints (!!) wanted

I started from an earlier state and reworked the upper part, later I will start hardening the other parts. I am not really sure how to get the hole working well and why is my viewport showing triangulated faceted faces when looking at the unsmoothed model? ^^

I am thankful for all help I can get!

Are you using an editable mesh or editable poly? If you are using an editable mesh then that's probably why you are getting triangle faces.

What do you mean by 'getting the hole working well'?

Not a lot of work for me to give a critique right now though.

Normally I wouldn't suggest it but you say you're a newbie so maybe you don't know but I believe it's your smoothing groups. If it's not that then it could be problem with your geometry, in which case go in and have a look at the offending areas, make sure there aren't duplicate verts on top of each other, that kind of thing.

Like swag said there's not all that much there yet to comment on, also guns aren't really my area so I doubt I'd be much use anyway. Still I look forward to seeing more

That is how polys display in max 2013. It is extra info. The guys are right you have to use smooth groups to get them to look flat but at this stage not a biggie really?

Hey guys, thanks for your comments. It's no big deal with the facetted faces I just don't remember it when is was modeling some months ago. I will try out the smoothing groups, thanks!

Showing a smoothed model doesn't help us much, we need to see the wires, especially if you have some pinching. And most of the time adding geometry doesn't help if you have a mesh problem.

Please show us a wireframe shot
