This is for anyone who experienced a problem with the render result for the normal map - I got help from the Support forum and was told that the render/preview window is buggy for this and does not show you the true normal map.

If you render out the normal map to a saved file then open it in Photoshop you may see a different and hopefully correct result. The thread is here.
