I personally hate flash sites like that, things should navigate easily and pop up fast,
no slow animations of menu's. You also work in a frame, which will cause trouble when you want to start posting higher resolution renders or screenshots. Making a portfolio website isn't easy at all, I went through four or five sites myself before I finally got the result I wanted. So, take your time, work on the content some more, and some day the design of your portfolio will become more clear as the content grows and the feel of your portfolio will reflect your work. |

ive nearly got my portofolio ready to go just want a little more content on there.
I'm with Wesley in that I personally really cant stand flash web sites, particularly for portfolios. I really admire the work and scripting that goes into them but they're just too slow, can make navigation a pain and have practically zero accessiblity rating. We had a whole 3 hour lecture from this guy at Uni on adapting flash sites ot be accessible cross browser and for stuff like screen readers, optimisation and all that jazz. At the end of 3 hours he quite literally ended the presentation with "long story short - dont bother". I tihnk flash animation can be a really cool way to enhance a site and add depth to certain elements, but i think if you're showing work to a prospective employer it needs to be quick, easy to use and straight to the point in no time at all. I've been through god knows how many designs, and this article has really helped direct me. I tihnk i've finally got something which has a fair balance between 'technically functinal/adaptable' and 'artistically creative'. However i'm well aware that within a week of going live ill hate it again :-P

In my opinion Flash just bogs down your site...seems to annoy more people than it impresses. I've always been a fan of just "art dump" sites like:
http://mv.cgcommunity.com/ http://www.hethe.com/portfolio05.html http://www.benregimbal.com/ I think the artist in you will always want to make something that's pretty but at the end of the day all that should matter is that your work stands out and is easy to view. Right now my site is just a temporary 1 page type of deal but I think even when I get off my ass and actually make a working one, it won't be much more than what I already have. I think there's another school of thought for this that believes everything about you should show off your artistic skills. Website, demo reel case, business card, etc. That may be the case if you're trying to be a graphic desgner or something that will actually use skills like that, such as webdesign. But I think the straightforward sites always leave the best impression. Bit of a rant there.. Gav |

This article has been keeping me busy for some time too. I just can't figure out how to make everything work. I think I covered most of the things in there. I still have problems with the "easy to read thumbnails" so for now I just added a link at the end that does that "art dump" thing. Can work if you want to view it fast... but... don't know... not really professional, or is it? I still need to think a lot about this... or maybe I just need to make more art and stop thinking about those little things like the dimension of my thumbnails and the font of my email address
