One simple question man: what are the keys to change to poly, egdes, verts? Because when I do it I need all times to go to unwrap modifier and select in that sub-menu the option who I want...

Thanks RM I've been unwrapping for a while now and was kinda self taught so you showed me a few little time saving tips that will be invaluable in the future. Good tip also on seperating mirrored uv's off to the side for render to texture stuff. cheers!

Also, a good way to do that handle on the side is a -> Normal Map -> Top/Bottom in the uv edit window. Then just pull out the outer edges a little to correct the checker pattern.

Here is the way i do it:
-unwrap uvw modifier
-edit
-i choose whatever method: planar, cylindrical, etc
-i uncheck normalize map, so you don't have to play with the gizmo to get the checkers right BUT you'll have to down scale the part you choosed, coz it will be HUGE (but with the right proportions ) . zoom back to see it
what does normalise actually do?

As far as I'm aware, it'll fit anything you have selected into the 0-1 UV space (haven't checked though, I'm going by what Maya does when you tell it to normalise).

The Normalize Map option fits/scales the selected part in the texture area(the bold blue box in the edit uvw window), which is not a 1:1 scale
uncheck it and you'll have the right proportions
