Cheers andrei313, glad to be here. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm planning on making another tutorial like my Thrull one for Leviathan through 3D Total or another site. If you guys ad any ideas that you wanted more focus on, just let me know...I think I'll just be going mor einto detail in general but still try to avoid making it a Max specific one.

Yeah, 22...heh. I've been "drawing" for a long long time but have really only been desinging my own characters for 3d for a few years. I've never really considered myself that good at it and get frustrated with drawing fairly easily...most of my concepts are just doodles in my sketchbook, I usually can't wait to get it into 3d

I've been using a 3d app for about 5 years now. Started off with XSI, used that for years and have switche dover to Max in the past 2 years.

Thanks!
Gav

Cheers for the answers Gavin, I wasn't expecting exact figures or anything as they were very general questions! In fact it's quite helpful to know about work in the other cities, I may have to look into that - I'm certainly not bound to Toronto, i've just only been to Ontario so that's all I 'know'.

Andrei - my bad! I meant to say CGsociety.

First of all, thank you very much for your time Gavin. Very interesting interview.

I had another question though. The answer to the final question is this:

"I usually try to stay away from filters ..." .

Why do you try to stay away from those filters? The only thing i can come up with is that they look to generic, but then again, with some tweaking I find them very useful. And what is your alternative for not using many photoshop filters.

thanks in advance

petrol: Cool. Ontario definitely is nice, British columbia really has it's own look and even though I miss Nova Scotia sometimes :P

doylle: Filters can definitely be used in a clever way but I've been steered away from them over time, as you've said they can come acros as being very generic. I've mostly just been encouraged away from them from art directors and peers. Not overly sure what my alternative is to using all filters but I usually photo source most of my textures (Leviathan being the only character I've pretty much painted all by hand) and have found little need for them (excluding the ones I mentioned in the interview.) I also usually work in a lot of layers when making textures and tend to achieve looks that I need through a combination of them (gunge overlays, scale patterns, etc.)

Hope this helps a little!
