[Tutorial] Weapon creation (M37 Ithaca)

4 hours 25 mins. Probably not as good especially texturing wise as Racer's tuts, but maybe it's of some use to somebody!

Millenia man you were my role model back in the day when I actively created weapons for mods.

Still watching your video although I pretty much know how to create one, really, I just want to see your 3DS Max workflow. Personally, I use Maya, and honestly, it's quite similar, one thing that I've noticed though is that the tools are named a bit iffy in 3ds Max.

For example, the "Graphite Modelling Tools" have been there as long as I remember in Maya as standard Polygon Tools, also, like the "Swift Loop" tool, why couldnt they just call it "Insert Edge Loop Tool"? I mean, I would have to tinker to figure out what it does although I'm well aware of how to insert an edge loop.

Anyway, good job man, watchin' the vid right now, you still rock, life is good.

EDIT: Here's my creation workflow:

1. Create First Person weapon model maintaining quads, UV Map it.
2. Duplicate First Person Model, apply Smooth, insert edge loops where needed to create my High Poly model.
3. Duplicate First Person Model yet again, this time remove edge loops while making sure they're not the edges of my UV islands, voila, Third Person model done.

Why this way? Because all of my models have a UV map, which is quite because before nDo, I used Bump Maps (basically gray scale height maps) for details such as text and whatnot on my High Poly model which were baked into First Person (and Third Person) models.

Also, because I did not remodel the gun 2-3 times, I saved a LOT of time. It took me 30-45 minutes to have HP model of the most complex gun, and 20-30 minutes to have a third person model done as well, which will end up using the same texture maps as the first person model since the UV maps are the same.

What do you think Millenia?

Yeah that works too, I personally like adding small details with nDo, I also find it the least restricting to make a decent high poly when you're doing the high first but that's just me :P

People have different preferences; I've done other ways several times but this is the way I personally prefer.

Any chance of a straight download link?

Youtubes not the greatest for stopping and rewinding parts with out destroying your bandwidth.
