Allright I'm gonna try to write something down, I hope you guys do the same
![]() Phalogore3d Doesn't really feel like metal to me, it's closer to rubber for some reason but I like your scratches. A Sober Irishman A bit to blurry! Millenia you rock Braveryd Awesome rust, but personally, I think you overdid the normal map, but a really cool effect you have there. Latinmessiah Nice! But it also does look like galvanized metal. PIX A bit simple maybe the blue doesn't really fit. Philly13 It does look like you smacked a rust texture on it, a bit too random? Afaria Looks nice doesn't it? Not much too special, but that's not needed. TheCorey It's maybe a bit of a bad screengrab, looks blurry to me ![]() Pankake You're a spander! Looks great ![]() Sampson I love it, just too bad you didn't put use your normal map further. But lovely metal. Sover Clean but your normal map looks inverted? |buddy|. Yeahhhh.... Well you're doing something different ![]() Susia you rock. Tiros you rock too. bogas Looks a bit unfinished. I like it but get rid of that lighter gray part. Great job everybody, I really don't know what to vote. Pff millenia I guess, I loved susia his one too but black doesn't feel right for a spanner, well that's what I think ![]() Do NOT take my comments too serious. I suck at it. |

Were quite a while I did this, so decided to give it a go:
Phalogore3d: I think that you might've gone a bit over the top on the noise with this one. Actually though, it looks pretty fine in the maps, the diffuse isn't that very grimey at all, the specular it a bit noisy, but that should be fine, so instead I think the lights were a bit too strong in the presentation. And so unfortunately it's kind of hard to judge this, when one can't quite clearly see how the maps would turn out in a natural lighting environment. A sober Irishman: At first glance, what clearly stands out to me is what seems to be the PS cloud filter I think. It's also quite blurry and a bit under-detailed for the texture-size. I think what you should aim for is a cleaner base and then adding some details from there ![]() Millenia: It's on the verge of being oversharpened imo, yet it adds some intresting detail. The head of the spanner however seems to be a tad blurry. There's also some stretching, and the normals at the end of the handle looks a bit iffy. But now I'm being a bit overly negative here, it's afterall a good texture, and the materialdefinition is great. Those things I've mentioned lets it down just a tad though. Braveryd: Well, this thing does look good in fact. But I'm not quite sure about the material-definition. It seems that the shiny parts on it are either a layer of paint/coating that's peeling off, but then it's a bit too shiny imo. And if it's just metal that isn't rusty, then it's a bit too clean and looks like it's layered above the rust. So, the materialdefinition needs some work ![]() Latinmessiah: Seems to overall be a pretty good texture, only the "aquatic" feel to it with those highlights kinda messes with the material-definition a bit. The amount of noise it adds to it makes it look a bit like stone, but otherwise it's good. PIX: Overall the texture feels a little flat. I think it'd have been better if you got some depth and sharper cuts into the paint. Instead of having small chipped parts there should be some stronger/bigger damaged areas imo. Snipergen: The specular could've used a bit more love imo. And the metal does look like metal indeed, but somehow a bit unfitting. It looks more like the kind of metal you'd find on metal plates rather than a forged item. Then there's the dirt being cut off at the edges due to seams. But I like it still, intresting colours and dirt ![]() Philly13: The problem here lies with the base, sorry for coming off with such a negative tone, but not having a clear base can really ruin a texture at times. I had some trouble with it myself while tryiing to get that rusty effect, it's quite hard really. As said, you should try to start off with a cleaner base and then add details from there. You should also avoid including images in your texture that have highlights, that can give some nasty results, especially in the normals. You'd have been better off creating a heightmap for that scrolly bit. Afaria: I like this one actually, as it has a clean and pretty good base. You need to work a bit further on defining the material through different details though. Also, there's one thing which is pretty essential to pulling off the materialdefinition for metal, and that's a specular map, however, it seems you decided not to add one. Keep that in mind ![]() TheCorey: The materialdefinition needs some work, it doesn't really strike me as metal. Then there's also the normals which makes it look a bit soft I think, that's ZBrush's fault though, as it puts everything into one smoothing-group while baking normals. Pankake: Nice to see you here Pank I assume you went for a bit of a stylized look, it turned out to be a tad bland, although it's still a bit charming because of it. The thing which lets it down a bit though is the very strong normals imo, it makes it look a bit like plastic. I'm unsure what kind of approach you had to this one though, so it's a bit hard to judge.Sampson: The scrolly bit turned out really nice. As for the body though, it looks a bit like it was actually cut out from a thick metal plate rather than forged, partly due to the lack of shape in the normals I'm afraid. I think it'd have really make this piece pop. Some well-placed and well-seen dirt would also have been in order ![]() Sover: as mentioned before, it looks like you have a problem with the normals, might be the green channel perhaps. Other than that I think it looks good, could use some more detailing in the metal though. |Buddy|: Well, I can't crit that, it's just different ![]() Susia: The hard edge-lines makes it look a bit flat I think, but I'm not sure about it really. Kind of hard to crit, you did a good job. Perhaps the metal looks a tad too dark though ![]() Tiros: Well dude, you're simply awesome.. I just adore you.. make me a tut plz! Bogas: It's very clean and looks a bit flat. I think it could benefit from a bit more details and dirt, and as mentioned before, the shiny part looks a bit out of place. I think the rest of the metal could prolly go with a more intense and contrasty specular too, to get some life into it. But good job nevertheless ![]() pheew.. thought I'd never finish! /edit: gee, forgot my vote. Well then. It came down between myself, Millenia and Susia, and obviously I'd have voted for myself since I'm so awesome. But as I'm not allowed to, I guess it's between Millenia and Susia ![]() I like both of the entries, but due to some minor flaws in Millenias which is mentioned in his crits, I have to go with Susia.

Millenia, Susia, Braveryd or Tiros?... Hmm?
That was the question I had to answer. Solution came to me pretty fast when I saw the texture res for Tiros's entry. If you didn't write it there I would have assumed it was much larger. Great usage of texture res!
