Diegio - Thanks, I'm glad you like it!
Tiros - Because the side of my box is white, I was getting white aliasing around the door in my renders. Of course, your solution would have been the best, I don't know why I didn't think to turn off double-sided surfaces! ![]()

I didn't get to add nearly as much detail as I wanted due to time, but I am very happy with the outcome. I think I'm getting a bit better with texturing now. I screwed up with not spending enough time unwrapping though so I had to do a lot of trial and error to get things in the correct spots.
My original concept was to have the top blown off and bullet holes like it was in a war zone, but after doing a quick search I found some withered looking mailboxes and figured it would fit more in the limit so I settled with that. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by JBaird; 08-05-2008 at 09:09 PM. |

JBaird:
Looks pretty nice! A couple of notes though: 1) Don't use PNG image format for internet! File size is WAY too big (about 1.5 MB) and takes forever to download. You really REALLY should edit your post and change it to JPG which would be under 200 KB. 2) Texture resolution should be 2:1, so you're losing half of your texture resolution by using 1:1. So you should be using 1024 x 512 or 2048 x 1024. When exporting the UV layout from your 3D software you should be able to specify 2:1 ratio so you don't have to make any adjustments. 3) I like the rusty hole you made in the bottom of the box, however I think the edges of the alpha mask should be harder edged, I can see some softness and partial transparency there that isn't realistic. 4) I think the handle and areas around the handle should show more wear and dirt - that's the part that gets consistently used. TheCorey: 1) I think it's a little bit silly to have "MAILBOX" written on the side, since it's already obvious what it is. Having text is nice, though - how about someone's last name, or street name? 2) Your texture would benefit greatly from some baked ambient occlusion! 3) I think the normals are a little strong and too "bumpy" - if you used CrazyBump maybe tweak the settings? Otherwise pretty good! I can envision this mailbox on a quiet, rustic, rural farm road. Is that what you were going for? ![]()

This is my first go at the texturing; it’s something I need to do more so I hope to do it most weeks. Its a nice break from building levels and the wonderful eat 3d tutorial I am working through.
It took a total of 75 mins, its ok but feedback is always welcome. I didn't have my best Photoshop brush’s on this machine as well. Still feels good to finish something. ![]() Maps |

@sugarskull
Yeah my bad on the PNG I had a JPG version of all the images that I saved as but uploaded the wrong ones, Ill fix it. Yeah I agree I screwed up on the texture from the start but I already was too far to fix it when I realized what I was doing. lol I really should of spent a few more moment's putting a bit more wear and tear in the right spot's but I ran out of time, but I agree though it does look a tad silly that for the most part the rest of the mailbox is intact. I may go back and fix it for my sake since I enjoyed making it and I think it came out decently. The alpha mask comment makes a lot of sense, and I most likely should of made a few smaller hole's also in other part's including the side's. Thanks for the comment's, it will help me concentrate on what need's to be fixed when I go back to it. Edit: There I fixed the pictures, they should load faster now. Kamrat:
Love your mailbox! I don't think the rust is too much, in fact, you might even want to add more. With a box this rusty I think there would be some streaks of rust on the wood beam and post supporting the box.

This turned out alright I suppose, but ovbously I wish I had more time. Not very happy with my normal map. meh, oh well.
