hey skully nice portfolio, "am not good at hand painting"
dont worry about hand painting, with the stuff i seen in your portfolio (3d visuals and game assets), you dont need to worry about hand painting. The stuff you have already is really cool |

STC 17 - Tatsur0 Submission - "Itai"
![]() Sheets I started with a bake, then applied a base color (green) painted on some white splotches (very small) attempting to get some dimples/texture for the plant skin, I used added highlights and then used I believe it was the watercolor filter. It's very hard to follow my steps as I went back and forth a lot but everything was done with paintbrush, burn, dodge, sponge, and clone stamp. My goal was to give the flesh of the plant a natural translucence to it. I'd like to spend more time on this but I'm going 24+ hours without sleep and wifes leaving me home with sick kid heh. If I can find more time this week I will probably give this another try. Nice work Tiros, love the cartoony/celshaded style (so much soooo I played with it a few times) and to you too Fleistad, I like how the bump gives quite a bit of detail but the thorns feel neglected or hardly noticeable when compared (maybe cause they're share the same brown color). Good luck all, Tats... [Edit] I took some personal time and continued working on my entry. I again wanted to stick with a translucent plant/frog like skin and so added some yellow and brown, quickly tossed together a highpoly normal bake to add in some veins, and overall gave it more definition and color. I also added in dirt to the bottom using a basic brush and playing with 2 colors. I was striving to make it look alive and dangerous, I am quite happy with the results but would like to return with what lil time I have left and clean up some more. Hopefully I won't run out of time like I did the robot SMC Please post any crits you might have, they are very much appreciated.Tats... Last edited by Tatsur0; 06-11-2008 at 09:52 AM. |

Tatsur0: Well, I'm just thinking that rather than painting in the highlights you should have put the texture into your normal maps with an average strong specc allover.. not sure, but think that'll make it look a bit better.
Also, perhaps a fresnel material could help you getting what you're after? ![]() Cheers!

Neat Shega, perhaps a bit too grainy normal for something handpainted
![]() It actually reminds a bit of my current texture.. thought I'd have another go and accidentally saved over the last one.. not even that.. I passed the deadline.. so I don't got a valid entry no more.. except from that image already uploaded ![]() But this new one's gonna be a portfolio piece methinks.. ( WIP) ![]() Cheers!

Whats up all,
Workflow: -started off with setting up the scene to render, camera and lighting set up. Took about 20minutes. -painted color first on the thorns then the body. Low opacity brush with variations of color. -bump map (wanted to do normal maps but have no experience as of how yet.) -created a sphere around the object with ramp shader -plane for ground and fractal for bump map and gave it sandy color. -total time 96 minutes. ![]() |

![]() ![]() Well I haven't done diffuse painting in a while so it was really a pain in the butt in the first place. My basic concept was a firetree with WoW like feel to it. I started off with a desatured layer with some random strokes in it to give something to work with. After that I started laying out the basic forms with a large brush 40px~ or so. After that I worked in the details with the rest of the time that I had. I didn't have time to fix the seams. Last edited by susia; 06-11-2008 at 02:06 PM. Reason: wrong beauty image and forgot maps |
