STC 16 - Tatsur0 Submission - "Kascade Vineyard"

sheets

Work-flow: I spent a majority of the time sneezing and blowing my nose as my seasonal allergies have kicked in full on :/ I started off by browsing cgtextures and my own personal library for materials I felt fit the theme, once I had em all ready I cut em up, painted on, clone tool'd each individual piece avoiding any and all repeating. I applied baked shadows and using burn added water stains, more shadows, highlights and some edging. Unfortunately I spent too much time experimenting and ran out of time before I could add the bands. Not all have em but yeh just one less addition to material.

"Kascade" was and old Online nick I used roughly 14 years ago, thought it fit the theme so used it to label the vineyard.

Goodluck all,
Tats...

hmm, well i gotta say that Talon`s tutorial on how to make specular and normal maps was quite usefull, (thanks Talon! ) so i managed to make the spec and bump in less than 10 mins and the difuse was almost 80 mins.Started with baking the occlusion map, added some wood map i had before, tilled it and tweaked it a bit to match the direction of the wood, added some extra details with the color burn, added the wine logo and the year of the wine it was holding (hehe some preety old wine ), extra specular in the diffuse was added as a soft light layer and thats about it.

hello!
I first baked an AO map
than I did my barrel, found a plank wood texture wich I tweaked to fit
after that I made my metal stripes, its 2 rust metal textures and one concrete texture all overlayed onto each other
for the legs of this thing, I used some newer wood plank to contrast with my very old barrel
I added some nails
found a stancil font for my writing on dafont.com
did my specular and normal map, some lightning and thats it!

Christ some really really good entry's here. I'm not happy with mine, can do better. Cos of the crappy normal and spec that I didn't had time enough for.

Maps

Cgtextures, multiply, crazybump, you know the stuff. Not happy with it, bah.

The one thing I've been surprised with is the lack of color/texture difference between the barrel and the "barrel-holder" (a few entries however did differentiate). If they were made out of the same wood, created during the same year and exposed to the same amount of sunlight over the years then I'd be impressed! Just food for thought

I noticed that too requiem, I made sure that my wood was diffrent, but not too diffrent so it still matches a bit.
Svelle, I see a problem I had too with my AO map, the wooden horizontal plank on the base of it had a very dark seam (near the M of the text "maps")
I wondered what caused that o_O
Also, your spec map or whatever is alot nicer than your current diffuse! Much brighter and better colours.

Some really nice entries here

About the AO-problem.. prolly caused due to overlapping UV's. Normally I wouldn't overlap any segments in the Unwrap for a STC.. but this one was kinda rushed and done just before the comp would be hosted.

So sorry about that.. the unwrap might not have been perfect. I'll be sure to check for overlap-errors next time

This might help you out a bit to get what you're after.. Not really a topnotch result, but with some experimenting and tweaking you'll prolly find out a way sooner or later

/Edit: um, seems I forgot to include the link, and no longer remember where I found it, sorry

Cheers

I agree with you requiem
the thinking I had to make my holder in a very different wood is that all of the storage that I saw, the kegs are never stored on tiny litle holders, they are stored in some kind of huge shelf that contain many barrels, furthermore they dont have a tap when stored
so I figured out that this keg just got out of the storage and was recently set up onto a holder wich could be brand new or at least very different from the keg
