Started with a color. Filled a metal base on a layer under it. Masked the color layer to get the worn paint.
ctrl-Selected the mask expanded by one, filled a new layer underneath to get the primer paint.
Picked up a "bare metal" texture from cgtextures to generate normals from. I couldn't get the paint to be a normal map because it would just be too "smooth" and bumpy no matter how weak I made it.
Sign taken from google. Worn with a mask.
Dirty spots on a separate layer with lowered opacity.

Oh and I got ambient occlusion on it too. I assume that's ok .

First things first, I needed to decide if I was going to do a new looking tank or a used one. After that, I looked for reference images so that I could get an idea of where dirt and grim would collect. Then I started texturing. Laid down a simple base color for everything. Used the shape tool in Photoshop to create the color bands and any other odds and ends that needed to be made. Then it came down to what dirt map I wanted to use as an overlay layer. I went through a few before I got a look that I wanted. Cleaned but the seems the best I could, then saved out a bump map, spec map and a normal map.

Wow you even timed the seconds ^^
And well done theo =) nice to see you here too. If I may comment you Big Toe, the colours look a bit too, bright and contrasting. You should saturate it a bit more if you can, and the render is quite small to see the detail too

Made a base metal paint using filters, then just used a couple of grunge brushes to rough it up. Spent just under an hour in total excluding 10 mins looking at refrence images.
