Well, seeing as it's been a really busy week, having had my prom yesterday and the final examination being tomorrow.. I'll just have to throw together something today rather fast.. I'll try to get something organic for the next comp.

Texturing a human head might just be the thing. you don't need a complex mesh for it, no tricky alpha planes, etc. just skin & face painting.

Tiros, you have a very valid point - yes we have always been allowed to use hand painted textures. There's a few problem's here, mainly that the combining of hand-painted textures with photo-sourced ones in the same competition makes it very difficult to judge!

With the renders being the main judging criteria (since they display first) the hand painted textures are vulnerable to both a genuine rendering disadvantage (if no normal maps are created) as well a stylistic disadvantage. Many people just plain dig the final look of a normal/spec/occlusion render with quickly applied photo textures (hell I dig it too). Sadly though, I think many of the newer artists are unfamiliar with other art styles and disciplines, and they need to learn to adapt to these other styles and disciplines in a few competitions. The industry is brutally unforgiving about this sort of thing. No one walks into a job with their own style and techniques and gets to keep it unless it flawlessly matches the style and techniques that everyone else on the art team is using.

It would be awesome to offer people a challenge that's outside their own safety bubble of nearly-automated texture creation. It'll help a lot of people grow, and I want to see Fleistad paint. I know he can btw, I just want to see it!

Anyway, it might be even smarter for us to suggest a Hand-Painted texture competition or sub-category within the same competition. 2 winners might be more fun! We also might consider changing the rules so that hand painted entrees get 180 minutes to compensate for the increased amount of time they do (and SHOULD) take to create.

Lemme know what you think, if any of these ideas sound plausible, whatever anyone's thoughts are. I just want to find any way we can churn out more pros in this site while keeping things interesting!

i think it might be cool to pick a game and everyone tries to match that style, then there is actually a serious basis on which judging occurs instead of just "oh i guess that looks the coolest" Like say WOW, or Halo, OR ummm shadow of collossus...i dont know just some game with a fairly distinct look.

Oh and how bout a Flat out TEXTURE sheet contest. it would be nice to just do world textures instead of texturing objects all the time. I notice almost no one has any world texture work even though its an integral part of game design.
