I made it up as I went along tbh. I started with the gun itself. I've always been a sucker for hard edges/surfaces so it came very natural to me. After that I figured that it needed freedom of movement in both horisontal and vertical axis to engage all kinds of targets.

So I started by making the vertical axis. Time was a factor so I quickly made the pivot point and thought I could figure out a way to connect the gun to the pivot point while I was modeling the pivot. Then I realized that it would need some sort of counter weight as it seemed pretty front heavy. Thats when I decided to make the gun/counterweight a single component that could be mounted on the pivot (I'm also a sucker for components...). Then I needed the horisontal axis, and I made another cylinder. I needed something that could turn it, and for some reason I though of a ball bearing-ish solution using some small motors to drive the main horisontal disc. Thats about it. Added some detail here and there where I had time for it and saw the need for it.

I dont know what it is about that design, a lot of you seem to like it. Personally I like some of the other entries better
Seriously, there is a lot of cool designs and nice models there. Many of them are even nice and clean even though they are complex.

Hah, I just realised that I put the bloody shells backwards. D'Oh! xD. Ah well. Anyway I voted for fabiodan. I of course as many of you liked Tom's first entry but to me it looks more like some sort of an AA gun rather than a sentry gun. But he's getting well enough votes to win anyway

Hehe, if you look closely at my 2nd entry you will see the the rounds are facing the wrong way too .. my first entry wasnt supposed to be a AA gun - however the pose I set it in kind of made it an AA gun :/
