Just wondering

Can we use normal maps on these models? They're kind of a texture but kind of not a texture. This theme looks like a great opportunity to use normal maps.

I've made exceptions in the past and I will be doing in the future too so if you can make a lowpoly, a highpoly and bake the normal map in 90 min I'll consider it valid. You can still have a good entry if you post the highpoly (with meshsmooth over it and all that stuff)
I won't encourage normal maps in this comp because people will start adding detail in Photoshop and CrazyBump and that's not modeling anymore. So... stay away from those

Ok, finaly I spent 80 minutes for this model. I add some new buttons without reference for the panel, so I invent them. I'm happy with the final render, not my best but something ''nice'' .

i am pretty happy with my model, its 7,802 polys and i know that is super high, next time i will try to keep it low

ok so this is the update because i only used 53 minutes for my last model, so i took 14 more minutes that brings me to 67 minutes, all i did was made the weights more realistic by inseting and extruding them back

how i made it:

chamfer boxes for the chair/bed thing
cylinders for the legs
cylinder for the bar
boxes for the back support
tubes for all the weights

basic extruding and stuff

Nice improvements guys.
Glicerart, the panel is a lot more interesting even if a real one doesn't need so many buttons and most don't have extruded buttons It adds to the complexity and makes it stand out. I'm still not convinced that the part you run on is big enough
AndyTheGameNerd nice addition on the weights. They did look superficial before.

Hey guys

This time I tried this speedmodelingcontest in a program that I rarely use, Maya.
Why? For modeling, it is one of the worst programs to work with.
Workflow and ease-of-use are NOT included in Maya
I didn't find out how to do GI renders in time, maybe I try to render it later...

Modelingwise :
Boxes and cilinders, dabbling, cutting, extruding, tweaking, cursing, wondering why something didn't work and why it did work , I-miss-my-pentool-moments...

I added a render ( GI and FG with Mental Ray) , it didn't improve the modeling thou

If you have workflow problems, it's your fault, not Maya's

There are 2 good Maya GI tutorials in the Tutorials section of the website; they both work super well.

Looking good fellas

Andy, had to merge your posts, no need for verbal diarrhea or a running play by play of your mouse clicks. Keep it to the point, thanks.

Andy, I'm kinda busy at this point with other projects but I promised myself I'll make an entry this week... just waiting for the right time. I missed the last one and I really feel bad about it.
BAROBA it's good to see you're trying to improve your workflow in maya The model is primitive looking but this is how you start learning, I guess you know that. Give the GI tuts a try and let's see a nice render that makes everything look better.
Thanks for keeping things clean around here requiem
