The model is ok. There are a lot of nice details there but the overall shape looks strange. As I said, I like the small details but the big parts are the ones that make this look bad.

Tigger
This is one of my favorites. Everything looks perfect. There was one thing that I commented about on the competition forum but I got my answer and I was wrong about that crit. So… maximum score from me Nice job.

Feld
The cars look good, detailed… nice shape but the overall look of your entry is not that impressive. I get the feeling that is abandoned… it doesn’t have that fun look that the comp was about.

GrizzlyGames
Not a lot to say. Good for a first entry…

Ragupasta
I really like this, the model and presentation are great. There is one thing that bothers me though… the things where the people are look more like cages to me… and this makes it a little strange, but that’s just my taste I guess

Warape
Very nice model. Looks a little unfinished… you can have add a lot more detail but I guess time ran out The presentation looks rushed too… there wire is not that easy to see and the model goes out of the image… You could have spent some more time on this.

Putz
Although the model looks finished some extra details would have helped a lot. It doesn’t have a lot of personality… It’s not something that I would try if I was in a Funfair that had all the rides that I see in this competition

RappyBMX
The idea is interesting but there are some things that look bad. The seats are not fixed in the main body… and the shape of the main body don’t fit that well on the slide.

master_f
This really does look finished. Very nice model, I had to give you less points on the presentation because it hard to see what’s there.

showNOmercy
This is another one of my favorites. It’s too bad I couldn’t give you a 5 for the model… it looks unfinished. Everybody runs out of time at some point :| I love the idea and I would give this a try

BAROBA
A little more detail could have made this look perfect. It lack a lot of little things and although it is a complex model it feels very simple.

RaptorGamer
The model looks good. The things from the sides are detailed and very interesting but the main body is exactly the opposite… simple, unfinished.

Glicerart
The model is simple but well executed. The proportions are a little off. Nice presentation.

Tkaza – The model is nicely done, although I personally find the front of your ship a bit awkwardly shaped. The flow from the main body of the ship into the front is too fluently. In my opinion it should be a rather abrupt ending of the body. Not quite sure how to explain it but something just seems off. The render is nice, but the wireframe is kind of hidden behind the GI render. You kind of obscure areas of the wireframe render while the purpose of that one is to see distribution etc. In my opinion the one shouldn’t (partially) cover the other.

Tigger – First thing I thought when I saw the render was “Damn, that’s full”. And it is. A bit too full for my personal taste. In my opinion the render sort of amounts into chaos. My eye don’t know where to start looking, and I mean that in a more negative way. It’s a very nice model, no doubt about that, the render kind of brings it down for me though.

Feld – The render, or more so the lack of a render, makes it seem less then it’s actually worth. The Maya watermarks really don’t do wonders for it. My suggestion would be to check the tutorials of these forums and try to get better at doing a nice render.
Rugapasta’s multi-platform clay rendering tutorial explains in detail how to go about making a nice clay render in Maya, which is the type of render that can seriously spice your bumper carts up. The actual model looks good to me though.

GrizzlyGames – Well, what can I say. First of all, let me start off by saying that your entry is seriously not bad. It really isn’t. I’ve seen you saying that it’s the first thing you ever modeled, which makes it better then what I ever did as a first piece. However, I do have to be an honest judge here and judge by one standard, and one standard only. I cannot lower the rating standard for someone, because that would give them an unfair advantage in the end result. Which kind of explains why it got such bad grades. What I do want to say though is that it’s great to see people that want to get to know modeling. Please don’t let these grades bring you down, if you keep practicing there will be a day when you can make pieces like the others and you’ll think back at your coconut stand saying “how the hell did I ever make this”.

Rugapasta – A nice ferris wheel, an item that shouldn’t be missing in a funfair ride competition. Nothing I can comment on concerning the model. The render would probably look better if you expanded the plane it rests on so that it doesn’t strike as much attention as it does. In my opinion it would also be better if you’d put the wireframe ferriswheel in the same scene as the GI one. And render that out as one image. But those are just some minor things on a very nice overall entry.

WarApe – Good overall model, might be cooler with a flashier font for the top text, presentation is good too except for maybe that large black shadow on the bottom left. Or is that painted on later to put the text in there? Eitherway it dominates the overall render too much. My eyes are drawn to it while they should be watching the model. It might just be me experiencing that, but since these are my comments I’ll just mention it

Putz – This render confuses me. I cannot really see how this thing would actually work? The title you gave it suggests that it swings and rotates the seatarea. The seat area in the top right makes no sense to me. I can understand that you’d want to show that more in detail, but it feels out of place. The black background makes the black wires somewhat useless. One can hardly see them. The model itself is good though, I like it.

RappyBMX – The unsafest device in this competition. You won’t see me entering this one I only just noticed that you placed the entire structure in the top right, at first glance I didn’t even see that. I think the focus is too much on this viewpoint in the render instead of on the ride itself. You can’t really see the 10.000+ polygons that have gone into this from the viewpoint the render is made at. What it does score on would be originality (presentation wise).

Master_f – Very nice model, very believable. What I personally don’t like is the huge contrast between the rather lightly colored model and ground, in comparison to the black that fills up the rest of the background. The only one that did a wire only entry, instead of a GI covered with a wireframe, which is not a bad thing.

showNOmercy – Very nice presentation, I like everything about it. Modelwise I would have put more time into making the cabins more believable. At the moment it looks kind of like solid objects that you can’t enter, while the actual point of the ride is sitting in those cabins.

BAROBA – The contrast between the white background and white GI is too small in my opinion. It doesn’t really pop out of the background. The top right image does, which looks better in my opinion. A solid model overall.

RaptorGamer – It kind of looks like the weight that counters the actual seat parts is floating in the air. Guess those are the details you mentioned that are missing out The base could also use some more details, but I think you ran out of time while messing with the cage structure of the seat part.

Glicerart – Quite simple in comparison to the others, but you already mentioned that you considered yourself as less of a fast worker I personally think kids would have more fun if the slide went down circling around the tower, maybe with some windows in the tower body. The current model however is nicely done too, looks like something small kids would go into, which is what it’s goal is probably.

tkaza: Very nice model. I like the faceting on the boat's hull, the seats, and the part where it's attached to the supports. The wheel is a nice touch. I really can't think of any way to improve the model; it's basically perfect as it is (although I'm wondering how people actually get on/off the ride). The model in the foreground obscures the one in the background in the render, but there's not a ton you can do about that. Everything else, from the good Global Illumination to the tri count, name, and title on the render, are all great.

tigger: Even with something as diverse as funfair rides, you chose something pretty abnormal and did a great job. There's almost nothing to crit on the model; everything looks very good. The presentation could use a bit of work; those bars would look better if they weren't obscuring the model at all (you could probably get rid of them all together), and the wireframe render looks weird, almost like I can see lines I'm not supposed to be seeing. Other than that, everything's great.

Feld: The bumper car is the heart of this model, and it doesn't look too bad, although it's tough to really see the details in your render since they're all so small. You could have saved many, many triangles on the ground, the roof, and especially the pillars. It would be nice to have a better view of the cars in the actual render as opposed to tacked on later, and possibly some detail other than just the cars and the roof over them, like a queue or a place for an employee to monitor everything.

GrizzlyGames: Obviously for your first time it's a little harsh to expect anything complex more than a cube, but I'm not letting you off easy just because you've just started It looks like there's a division in the front part of the booth; it doesn't show up in the final model, so you don't really need it. Same thing with the pillars the coconuts or whatever are standing on; they're divided in to quarters, which is a waste of polygons. The presentation's not too bad, although there's a pretty good Global Illumination tutorial over in the tutorials section that you should try out when you get the chance. Aside from that everything's fine. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be but I haven't been to a fair since I was like, 6.

ragupasta: I've always liked Ferris Wheels. They look like big ol' targets for when I get my hands on some sort of jet or giant robot or something. Homicidal tendencies aside the model looks really good. It's got a crazy polycount, what with the many, many sides you gave the support cylinders and the individual tiles in every single cabin, but I guess you were focussing more on the speed than you were the polycount. The presentation is good for such a large model (nice touch of color) and it's always nice to have a video of the process. I might choose a different font for the sign, but that's just me.

warape: I love the design of the ride, and you've done a great job modelling it too. Good distribution of polys, and I really like the shape of both the chairs and the guitar. The spinny things for the chairs look a little insubstantial, but if they look that in real life I can understand. The "Miami Rock" sign could use a few of those lightbulbs too. Great presentation and modelling overall. A polycount and maybe a "time spent modelling" would be good additions to the render.

Putz: The model looks pretty good. It's very simple compared to a lot of the others but it's one of the only ones with a realistic polycount which I think is even more important, since this is game art. The render makes it tough to see anything; the only real good closeup is on the back of the seats which doesn't help us much. The wireframe is almost impossible to see. I'd suggest not rendering on black and giving more thought to the angles you choose (check tkaza's entry for a good example of how to frame weird shaped stuff like your ride).

RappyBMX: Nice choice of ride, and pretty interesting angle for the render too. The boat looks really good and the track looks fine, but from this angle the chairs look really boxy and we can't see if there's any restraint or anything for the poor people riding this thing. Your score's kind of low because I took points off on both the render and the model since we can't quite see the chairs and they don't look good from what we can see, but everything else is fine.

master_f: Another Ferris Wheel! The render's a little contrast-y; a grey background would be best. The wireframe is a pretty odd way of doing it and we lose a lot of the wires on the white ground and in the shadow. The model itself looks pretty good though. The design is nice and the supporting structure and wheel are both very well modelled and very detailed. The design of the cars is good but I'm not sure that they're very well modelled; from the wireframe it looks like they have a lot more polys than they need. Other than that everything looks good.

showNOmercy: You certainly picked a crazy model. Everything looks really good; I like the simplicity of the cages or whatever (important in speed modelling) and the design of the rest of the ride too. The zillions of lights might be a little unnecessary but it looks like they're pretty popular in this competition. The presentation is good, the model's good, and that's basically it!

BAROBA: It always struck me as a little cruel that they had to run the horses through. They could just have the pole on the bottom and give people a handle up top and then the poor horses wouldn't have to be impaled. The modelling looks really good, especially the horse which isn't exactly easy to do when you're on a strict time limit. The presentation leaves a lot to be desired; there's a lot of white space and nothing's really big enough to see. The wires look very clean though, from the horse to the top thing.

RaptorGamer: You packed a lot of detail in to the cars and the arms supporting them. You ran out of time so the model's not done but what's there is pretty good from what I can tell. There are a lot of those little lights that everyone's so keen on which probably aren't doing wonders for your polycount but everything else is clean and well done. The presentation isn't top notch; we don't really need the image in the upper left, and without it the other two could be larger to let us see more, especially of the chairs. I like the font you chose though. Very fair-ish.

Glicerart: A simple, effective model. It's hard to see in the render if the slide ends at the same level as the base of the structure; a flat plane under everything would have helped to clear up my inability to determine spatial relationships. The model is well done and the presentation is good too, although for some reason the bars at the very top are quite dark in the left render. There's nothing wrong with the model but it seems that at 80 minutes there could be more detail, like a sign over the entrance or a queue or perhaps a hint of the staircase that would lead to the top. Good job though.

Congrats to all who entered, many great pieces made this a close one.

Thank you all for the helpful and thoughtful comments, I'm still pinching myself to see if I'm dreaming! This is such a fun competition that everybody wins by entering, we all learn something about modeling. The comps are great, makes me wish I had been doing this a long time ago. I plan to finish this ride off giving it a nice texture and some cool animation to put into a portfolio.

Thanks again Game-Artist.net!
