here is my entry, just started working on it 2 days ago so I'm glad the deadline was extended. I couldn't figure out how to get maya to render normal maps correctly so these are just screen shots.

My 2-day fence attempt

Wish I had more time (and polys) for details, but here it is.
1200 tris exactly
2 maps (x3 types each, Normal and AO. Opacity is packed in the AO alpha channel).
One 1024 for all objects
One 256 for chainlink fence tile

So finally i finished something. Got more problems to solve as really working on the pieces, but learned a lot by that.

Some Background Information:
There is no HighPoly Modell and the few Normal Map details are done in Photoshop.

The Fence is for Defending a Secret or Military Area and the Gate is Moving into the Ground to be open.
