Hogni´s Sketchbook

Well i guess it´s time to stop lurking and start learning I was flipping through the sketchbooks and saw some really nice stuff. I was also hoping that having a thread like this would serve as a motivation for me to keep up my pace.

I´ll try to refrain from posting old stuff since the purpose of this is to make new stuff regularly but i´ll start the thread with an old one.

Any crits and comments greatly appreciated.

Cool stuff, quite well rendered and the composition is easy to look at. But if I were you I'd try to make your landscape tell some sort of story, even if very simple. Putting a character trudging through the water could give a good sense of scale and could convey a story. I'd also suggest adding some reflections. The water isn't calm, but a sense of reflection would be worth trying.

Another thing I noticed is how flat the picture is. It has depth, but it seems to be made up of flat objects facing the camera stacked one after another, it's just not very dynamic, could be pushed further. Might just be me though.

Thanks so much for taking the time to give me critiques these are all excellent points and i see now that you mention it how flat some of the areas really are , especially that hill with the bushes i could have used to really show some dimension. And that point you made with adding a character really would have brought more life and motion into the piece. The reflection is kinda embarrasing since that seems to be ki d of a nobrainer to remember hope i wont miss something like that again Thanks again for taking the time to give me advice

Instead of endlessly trying to take on some really ambitious things to model and failing i decided i would tackle the ever classical dumpster and while it´s a reeeeeaaaly plain model and the texture isn´t even mine (sorry , i would give credit if i remembered where i got it ) i feel good about just following it through. I just wanted to try modeling something, putting on a texture and then play around with the bump and spec settings to see if i could make it look believable. Well that didn´t really happen but at least i got one of my projects from start to finish....... sorta

I guess the next thing would be deleting the uv´s , making a higher poly model out of it and then baking a normal instead of making it with the nvidia plugin right ? I was also wondering about how jagged these edges seem. My only solution to get smoother edges would be to chamfer them , but i have a feeling i might be missing something.

-any crits or comments greatly appreciated as usual, thanks everyone
