Sketches from Istanbul (not the city)

Hi Everyone! I figured I'd start adding some stuff here too and work on getting more involved with the community here.

For starters, here's a digital portrait (not a self portrait mind you) I did today. I'm more of a 3d guy than 2d, but I'm trying to get better. It actually turned out pretty good I think. But, I'm not an expert at this painting business, so if anyone has any suggestions or critique, I'd welcome it.

Since so many game artists go for a dark, dingy look, I intentionally took a stab in the opposite direction.

3d asset WIP

The base shape of a water tower in the area, with a very basic texture. Of major importance, have railing type stuff to add to the model, and the texture is going to need to be weathered... a lot. It hasn't been painted in a few years ;-)

This is a low poly spaceship for a 2d scrolling space shooter I'm working on with a few friends here and there as we have time to get together. The mesh is done, except that I think I'm going to remove the 'guns', since we decided on doing modular weapons if I recall correctly. Need to texture it... a lot.

My biggest weakness in my skill set right now is that I have literally done no sculpture/high poly modeling yet. It wasn't covered at all in school, and with being an old guy working full time and going to school full time, I just wasn't able to address that on my own while in school. Needless to say, along with digital painting I am embarking upon a campaign to ameliorate the condition.

I downloaded Sculptris since it is free and is supposed to be easier to get a handle on right away, so I will start out with that before moving on the the big guns. So, like probably 90% of people do the first time the get into sculpting, I created an alien... cuz, if it looks weird, then hey, it's an ALIEN!

Barbarian

This was a model I actually did a few months ago, but in the rush of getting it into a game for my capstone project, I had never gotten around to doing any AO or normal mapping, with the excuse that it was going into a cel shader in the game engine. (Major copout fail).

But, I revisited it today to update the texture, since it was my favorite character that I did from that game.

Oh, and when I mentioned critiques are welcome in my first post, I really meant for anything that I post in here.

Modular Environment for UDK

Hey everyone. I've been working on some modular environment pieces to put into UDK. It's been awhile since I've touched UDK, since I've been using Unity a lot more with my projects over the past year and a half, so I decided I'd keep it pretty simple and make some pieces based on my room.

Here's some quick renders of what I've got so far:

I had been going to try doing LOD, and this would have been the low poly version. However, after thinking about it, the geometry is really so simple that I don't think LOD would even be worth it, and I should just add the detailing to the baseboard/trim from the get go.

Based on reading a post in another guys thread, there can apparently be lighting issues if you don't close up the mesh on each of the pieces, so instead of one sided wall pieces, I've been adding the back side (just have the corner piece yet to do that to). It's probably all to the good anyways, if I want to make more than one room out of them.

Any opinions as to the above thoughts about LOD, and/or any suggestions/crits on these pieces at this time?

Oh, and based on my current understanding that UDK's units are roughly 16 units to an inch, my 3ds max units settings are currently set to generic units with 1 unit equaling .75 inches. Each module is 64 units wide, to make 4 foot chunks.
