New Portfolio - GTProductions.net
Hey all,
First time to game-artist, and I have to say, some pretty impressive stuff here. I can't come close to most of what you guys produce here, but hope to some day get there. So I just re-designed my website, and was wondering what you guys think of the usability/design/content. GTProductions is the site. I know the content isn't that great yet, but I'm still in school. -Alex |

you have massive walls of text on every page with tiny gfx thumbnails next to them
For a folio site personally I want to see the work first, not read paragraphs about you. I doubt anyone will read the text on the first page - its just filler and if your work isnt good then it doesnt matter to anyone what uni you go to or what course you are studying also you could really do with some stuff running to modern specs on your folio, it seems a little bit dated from a games point of view

your website just confuses me. What is your goal? your site isn't tailored to anything its got videos, web design, graphic design. As far as impressing an employer with that site, it wont, just because of the sheer range of content. But if you just want something to display your work for now it does a good job.
For content, less really is more. You have so many little images no one wants to see, which take away from your better pieces. And too much text. oh and i looked at your resume... overkill. For someone who hasnt finished school i dont think you need a 2 page resume. one thing i have always been told about resumes is to keep them to one page unless you have been around forever and actually done a lot of stuff. Hmm, I agree there is too much text. I'll take care of that, as well as the overkill amount of pictures. I am going for a general showcase of work, so i do not believe I should throw out all of my web dev work, for example. just for the sake of narrowing down my scope. I'm hoping to get hired to a place where I can apply more than just what is in my job description, so if i have a strong 3d modeling portfolio in the future, for example, but they also see that I can do xyz, you think it would hinder my chances of getting that job?
Also for the resume, would you have specific suggestions on what info on there isn't relevant anymore or is excess? I'm looking to cut but not sure what to cut. I know its easier from the outside looking in to figure out whats good and whats unnecessary. |

Also, in response to ben, yes i do agree, maybe i should make the portfolio page the landing page and then change the 'home' page as it is labeled now to an about me page for those who actually want to read the wall of text :P
As for the game stuff being dated, yeah workin on that. Hopin to get that up to date soon. |

I think you should think about what kind of job your wanting to get.
I do not think they have anyone in the gaming industry doing 3D and their web development. Not to say you should trash the web, but I think its just not appropriate here. Make a separate site for this, and show it to people who care about your web skills, because If your applying for a 3D position, I highly doubt there even gonna look. |

Talk to a recruiter, resume help is about the only thing they have been helpful for in my experience. If they give a toss about doing their jobs they will guide you as to what to change in your resume

Yeah, the problem is, at my college (WPI) the career development center is so out of touch with what is needed to get a game development job, that they suggest old, worn out ideas and traditions.
They are great for helping the ECE, ME, CS, and other majors with a 100 year legacy get great jobs, but for the game majors, they're still telling us to wear suits to job interviews and that you're not allowed to format your resume in a certain way. They think my fonts are too 'radical'.... wtf. |

I'm guessing most college career centers will be out of touch. Thats why E3 and hundreds of networking/recruitment events exist
I went to one and spoke to the recruitment guy for the studio I would love to work at, and asked him what he wants to see on a showreel. Thats a 5minute conversation that has shaped everything I have done for the last 6 months. Also spoke to a games recruiter, she sat on the phone with me and went through my resume line by line - basically what I'm saying is the people are out there who will be happy to help you if you approach them at these events
