William Geuze

So i wanted to share my portfolio with you guys. Its not big and amazing, just some standard stuff, thing im proud of is thehigh poly m4a1 full option though, when ive got the skills to texture this baby properly, i will, right now i'd do the model more harm than good. Theres some low poly stuff for a standalone flightsim, Fighterops, and a few weapon models from a project where i got kicked out, Zerosquad. In a few weeks im starting a new study, so i hope i can update my portfolio with cool stuff.

The url:

The content on the website looks ace, though it feels to me as its being let down somewhat by the layout and look of the site. It feels very old fashioned for some reason. The banner and menu to be specific.

Mambo can be a great backend in some situations to power a website, though you need to know a good deal on how it works if you want to skin it properly. Building up a portfolio from HTML and making sure the code is flexible enough for gradually adding more content could give you a lot more freedom in how you want to bring that content to the user.

That's just my critique from personal experiences though, keep it up!

Looks good, agree with Shadow's crit. My question is what are you trying to achieve, portfolio for fun or portfolio as a means to get into the industry within the next year or two? Cheers

thanks, i totally agree with you, i dont like making websites at all, so i guessed this was a neat way to configure my portfolio. Im a 3d artist, not a webdev, thats my opinion

thank you, im trying to get into the industry within the next 4 years or so

just browsed my portfolio myself a bit, i declare the beretta elite model as my best low poly gunmodel, id like to see if the guys at Zerosquad have textured this baby already, i thought someone on this forum is actually working on that, maybe he could post a render in a pm or something? thanks if you do so.

Hope you don’t think I’m being too harsh here, but I see a lot of little things that could make you look much better as an artist. Remember, it’s all about First Impression and Representation. Even the best artist can look bad if they don’t show their abilities in the best light.

At the top of your page where it says WGEUZE.NL, change that to your name. This is better for presentation, and remembering who you are because the user will see your name the whole time.

The whole news on home page is useless fluff for a portfolio site. Change this to your Cover Letter, which is a mission statement covering what you want to do and be. For example, “My name is William Geuze, and I want to be a 3D artist in the Gaming Industry. I specialize in Weapons, Vehicles and World props. Etc, etc…”

The Main Menu is much wider than it needs to be. There’s a lot of wasted space which makes the page titles jump to the opposite side of the menu a bit confusing. I’d tighten up that width and get rid of the mouse-over title jump. Additionally, it leaves a big empty vertical column of nothing on your page below that.

The Contact page is great, though you may opt to adjust it to a Resume page, as these are standard for Portfolios.

(The Important Part)
The presentation in the Gallery is a little confusing and annoying for a few reasons:

The images are placed to the far right of their titles yet directly beside the title of another piece. Try bringing these together or remove the titles all together since when the user clicks the thumbnail, they are taking to another page with a proper title.

Thumbnails lead to thumbnails of a variety of things. For example, the Zero Squad thumb leads to thumbs of eight different weapons, Fighter Ops leads to hummers and tanks, and so on.

Lots of unfinished work, and work presented unfinished even though it is. All the early WIP versions of your work (Colt M4a1, Ford Mustang, etc) shouldn’t be here and ESPECIALLY shouldn’t be the thumbnails leading to final work. This highly misrepresents your ability sending a bad first impression to employers looking over your work.

Here’s a suggest correcting the last two criticisms: Go through all your work, find the 8-10 best, most complete (models and materials) works you have and reorganize this Portfolio. I’d go with the Mustang, Charge and Viper final renders and maybe some of the stands & plans. Also include Zero Squad weapons, but since they are unfinished (untextured, not presented in game), be sure to keep them together, as though they are one piece. Possible put the Colt and western revenge in with them, and call it “weapon models”. (same thing with the Fighter Ops models).

In general, finish more of your work! While it’s possible to find a position just for modeling, it’ll be much easier full modeled, textured and shown IN-GAME work. You have to put the “game” in game art!

wanted to edit it:
Your cars and high detail models are REALLY good, but with the WIPs shown as thumbs, no one would even know until they go through every bit of your site.

thanks for your concerns
im trying to fix the part at the top where it says wgeuze.nl, i just cant find where to adjust it.. the part with the gallery, is true, when i configured this website i tried to solved that, couldnt make it happen, stupid websites that i dont understand

good point by the way, i rarely finish my work for games. Thats because or i got kicked out of a team or left myself (always loose interest after a while...) or the texture artists are lame etc. One day i can texture my models myself!!!1

If you'd sit down for a couple of days and read some UV Unwrapping and texturing tutorials you'll have full freedom over your models as opposed to having someone else do that for you.

Its definitely worth it and really not that hard.

What you said about not being able to change the title or configure the gallery, that was basically my point with building up a portfolio in HTML rather than Mambo.
