Environment Artist Portfolio - be harsh
Hell all, so this is currently where my website is.
I am in the process of creating a new piece, which is in my sketchbook and will upload that into a project page when its done, but for now this is what i have. The new scene is probably going to replace my junkyard gate scene. please be harsh with your crits, I really need a job. Any help would be great, thank you. Justin Superty's Portfolio |

Presentation and layout of your portfolio are awesome. But why do I have to click on those tiny "more" buttons to get to the next page? I was always clicking on the big images, but nothing happened
so I would change/add that. For the work itself: I like the variation of work you've got...western house, hard surface highpoly tech stuff...that's a good thing. But I think you need a bit more content, one building a some props isn't that much. The modular western house is your strongest piece but I think you could add a bit more to the scene. Add some grass, bushes, nice terrain and whatsoever so it has more the feeling of an finished environment. The Junkyard Gate is ok, though I don't like the textures very much in there. The normal maps make everything look washed out and the diffuse looks kind of busy. Some textures of the props look fine detailed (like the chair, scratches on the lamp) while others are really blurred out (the tire or the mattress). As for the UDK Mod Props section: the metal scratches of that high-tech door look a bit too randomly scattered on the surface. I would just add a few of them on the edges...sometimes less is more. Those Modular Wall Panels are uninteresting to look at, both the geometry/design and the textures are. Don't know how old they are, but they look like some of your first made assets. Ok, I tried to sound as harsh as possible just keep working on new stuff and more content ![]()

The more button should be more specific and clicking on the big picture is what I did too.
Building looks lonely by itself forcing you to do 3/4 down or 3/4 up camera shots, foliage will be nice add to the scene with some more buildings and parallax 2d background to fake the environment. The gate looks good for a part of the scene, you can probably stick that to a scene with your house? More contents will differently make the site more interesting, keep going. |

Hey thanks a ton for the feedback, it's really appreciated. You both bring up a good point about the more buttons. I will work on making the actual picture a link as well.
Good point about the western building, I will go back an really add an environment to that once I finish the new piece I am working on. The new piece will be replacing the junkyard as it is kind of a similar idea, only it is more established and it is a full environment. You are right about the junkyard though. I was not very consistent with my texture density and ended up making some assets way more detailed than others. Yeah maybe I should take out the udk mod props for now, good point. thanks again! all great suggestions |
