It's the top of the BG image. At the top left of the image, it's #000000 (black), but as you get towards the centre/right side, where the active space is, it gets lighter. It gets as high as #0f0f0f which, at 6% brightness, is quite noticeable.

It might be the calibration of your monitor that's making it look like it's blending in, but I can see a definite seam, on my screens.
