simple weapons/props portfolio

Hi-

If I could get some feedback on my work so far that'd be great. It's definitely an ongoing process. If viewers could focus on this particular model, that'd be great:

KYLIX 3D

Of course, general feedback is appreciated too. I'm just getting started for the first time with characters and environments...

this is my site's url: KYLIX 3D

Thanks!

Im no expert in the weapons department... but they seem a little blocky... and need more refined detail. Have you adopted the technique of baking normals from the HR?

If games are your target for these assets, than learning how to implement, and create normals from a high-res model is a must!

The other thing: textures could use more attention as well. Allot of the textures had a spray painted effect.... like someone spray painted them and the paint ran all over, clumped up, dried, and rusted.

Overall I would say your off to a great start! But pay more attention to detail, both in your models, and your textures

The overall layout and presentation of your website is a bit too weak. Look at Ben Clark - Character Artist or Ben Bolton or Jeroen Maton - PortFolio all these guys have a great layouts.

As for the weapon. You've modeled it out well, but all the renders are not great at all. Put a better material on it, like a grey material with a high spec on it and add a 3 point lighting setup. I would recommend texturing it. You don't need to include ref images, theres really no need to put them on your site. I hope that helps !

Zamberro, Mistry -

Thanks so much for your constructive feedback! I will incorporate your suggestions. I know myself that I'm still in the beginning stages of this work.

Thanks again!

Its nice work and nice portfolio but I think the AK has a bit too much scratches etc. Maybe tone it down a little? To me it seems like its un-realistic but other than that its all cool work. Keep it up.

Okay, so I'm going in a somewhat different direction with my portfolio than when I made my first post.

Here are my current questions:

I've added a 2D section for observational drawings. Is this good to have? And if so, what are the specific things I should focus on? Right now, I'm just alternating between drawing with pencil and pen in my sketchbook and using my Wacom tablet. I keep hearing an emphasis on traditional art skills, so I thought I should add this.

I have other things that I've been kind of working with, such as MEL scripted animations in Maya, building things in Unity 3D, and experimenting with OpenGL programming. How can I show this additional work without it being a confusing detriment to my portfolio/site?

Finally, I'm becoming increasingly comfortable with doing hard surface modeling, but is there another skill that I could develop as well to make me more versatile to a potential employer? Environments perhaps?

Here's my URL again: KYLIX 3D

Thanks!
