3D artist for hobbyist project
Paid: No   Level: Mid   In-House: Yes   Duration: Open Contract

Hi everyone.

I am a programmer who enjoys making computer games as a hobby and I am looking for an artist or two to help design and put together a game for fun. I currently have my own game framework supporting multicore processors with a range of possible graphical effects. It is still quite simple but now I'd like to put it to use actually making a game.

The exact details are not yet decided, and I am open to making almost any sort of game with it, depending on what we decide as a group.

Artists should be capable of making models, UV unwrapping and texture authoring. Animation is not essential but a bonus. The program that you use is not important as long as it can export to the OBJ format. I myself live in the UK, so if you live there then that is also preferable, but not really that important.

Please PM me or reply here if you are interested or want to leave any comments.

Thanks in advance,

- James

Hi guys, thanks for the responses.

My original plan for the game has just been foiled due to copyright issues (I wanted to set the game in a pre existing fictional world, so I contacted the people who owned the rights to it but they there would be copyright issues).

My backup plan was to discuss what sort of game everyone wanted to work on and then go from there. That way everyone would have a say as to what type of game they wanted to make, and hopefully would be more likely to see it through to the end.

As for what sort of games I am interested in I like puzzle games (point and click or more original stuff like armadillo run), action games and RPG's (not MMORPGS!). My last game was a space shooter along the lines of wing commander, so I'd like to break away from that a bit as I've done it all before. However I am still completely open to suggestions.

Thanks,

- J

Looks like you guys are taking this to the next level. Is there any chance that you can show us what you engine is capable of?

Hi,

As this project is new I don't have many good looking screenshots of my new engine as I don't really have much good looking art to test it with. I have however posted a screenshot of my last game (the space shooter one) to show that I can program things, and have the ability to make all the systems required for a full game .

My new engines current features / details are as follows:

- OpenGL for the rendering API, so potentially cross platform. I have only written the windows code for it at the moment.
- Support for multicore processors through a multithreaded engine architecture.
- Fully shader driven rendering pipeline, can apply any HW shader to any model through use of scripts. So any model can potentially have normal mapping or whatever I choose to put into the shaders.
- Post Processing system (for Bloom, HDR, Motion blur, DOF effects etc).
- Obj model format support.
- Own scene format.
- Configuration scripts.
- Architecture for a complex lighting system (shadow maps etc), but at the moment just set up simple blinn lighting as I don't know whether the game will require something that complex yet.

The rest of the engine will be tailored depending on the games needs.

Feel free to ask any more questions or leave any comments.

Thanks!

- James

its a shame that you dont want to do a space sim type game, as they are far and few between. Ive been working on ideas to do with a capital ship based game, which is more about tactics rather then all out dogfighting, though it still needs a lot of work...

Cool stuff, dude

Always nice to see indie engines put together, there seems to be less and less of them and more and more indie middleware.
